Mystery, Action, Drama, Romance, Slice of Life, and...Necromancy? An unusual combination in creating a show, however, it is one that manages to pay off. Red Garden manages to take each one of these genre's and mix them together for a highly original anime experience.
Red Garden thrusts you right into a story about our four main female protagonist and their struggles with trying to adapt to there new lives and as recently deceased high school girls living on borrowed time. You might think this show would take a very straight forward action oriented path. Given the shows premise and the fact that the girls are ordered to fight to stay alive, but this is far from the case. There is action, but it's not the main focus of the show in any way, shape, or form. Instead we follow our girls as they try to balance there new lives while solving the mystery around there death. The show, because of this has a very sophisticated feel to it.
Red Garden is an anime about survival, but about mentally surviving. It's about trying to get your life back together when everything you have ever known is flipped upside down. You will follow these girls as they try to adapt to there new life, and because of it change, grow and in some cases become completely different people. Which is what makes this show so enjoyable, is watching these girls go through just a tremendous amount of growth. Each character learns more about themselves then they could every had previously hoped for. As they become acquainted with one another, as there view on the world opens up from there previous narrow view point, as they learn the truth about there lives and there future, all of it leads to some of the best character growth in anime television, ever.
You will hate some characters in the beginning because of how the act and grow to love them as they change. Which, to the show's credit is something they handle very well. The writers of this show know how to make the viewer feel compassion and sympathy for each character. Rose, Claire, Kate, and Rachel all end up changing in some way, and it's damn powerful. How much these characters grow will just leave you speechless. You even end up feel sorry for Herve, while at the same time hating it. It's a show that isn't black and white, it's Grey, everything they deal with is Grey. The overarching plot does have some problems and unanswered questions, but at the end of the day they are forgivable. A series such a Red Garden is not about the mysteries surrounding these girls, rather it's the girls handling these mysteries and growing upon them.
I hated the art style of Red Garden, and I still kind of don't like it, but it has grown on me. I definitely prefer the character models, and setting of Red Garden then most anime. The characters and backgrounds look incredibly realistic, but the character mannerisms always annoyed me, right up to the end. They are on the brink of being realistic, but at the same time not being quite there, leaving me in a somewhat confused state. It's pretty then 90% of the generic anime that comes out today, but it is still rough around the edges.
I, for one, never really like the musical aspect that Red Garden tried to approach in the beginning of the series, which is why I was glad when they dropped it. I think trying to add a musical layer into a show is a good idea and has the potential to really add to a show, but I feel as if it hindered this series. It was like the creators of this show were going for some type of realism where each of the girls was just a horrible singer. Which, in real life they probably would, but it isn't real life, it's fiction. I don't really like listening to off-pitch singers, it annoys me, and it annoyed me hear. Maybe if they had gotten some voice actors that could also sing then it might have worked out, but sadly they didn't. Which, again I am glad they dropped it for the second half of the series(Somewhere around episode 9).
It's a highly mature anime that will leave the viewer in a very sombre state as they pray for the safety for the main characters. You will become attached as each character grows as people, you will feel sympathy for those you once hated and hate those you once liked. It's a complex anime of mixed feelings and genre's. It's a slice of life show through and through, you will follow these girls on there daily life as they simply try to survive, as they adapt to there new lives while trying to cling to what they know as reality. So please enjoy as you embark on this very sophisticated journey. read more

Murder, suicide, butterflies,Roosevelt Island and young undead girls. Welcome to Red Garden.
Red garden is a creepy horror-story starring four girls, Kate, Rachel, Claire and Rose who all died at the same place. Even thought they are dead they have been granted a life by a woman in exchange for them to at anytime fight all kinds of unnatural beings. Along with trying to live a normal life they also is trying to figure out what happened to them that night where their normal lives ended. This is just the beginning but the 4 first episodes gives hints on that there will be many plot-twists to come and that everything is not what it seems. The one thing that they do have in common is also the most interesting thing about the story, their common friend Lise who supposedly took her life the very same day they all died. This makes a really interesting way to start off a new series and I myself found it really interesting that you from the very first episode easily got sucked in the world that is Red Garden.
The art in is truly beautiful from the opening to the end but those who are not used to different animation may find it unusual and even ugly. Gonzo has done a brilliant work with this title and the artistry and style is really unique. The thing that I first noticed was that the hair of all characters have a gradient tone and no paint-on-shadows that most shows do, this makes the hair look really smooth, not hard and spiky like the stereotypical anime hair. Although this is nice it makes the already shoujo style of the characters even more shoujo-ish. There should be no problem with this if you have seen shows like Paradise Kiss and Nana before but even if you haven't the story will suck you in and you will get used to the style pretty quickly.
The music is also great, not only the opening and ending but the music in between is also very fitting to what is happening and what mood the scene is in. They seems to have been putting a lot of effort into making the mood just right as in many shows but the difference here is that they actually succeeded.
The characters in Red Garden are really something, the high school girls and really acts like it too making them easy to relate to. The girls are not meant to be superheroes with superpowers, they are just regular teens that for their own survivals sake must fight even though they don't want to. This can be seen early on in the anime, the agony the girls are in for doing what they do that will eventually take its toll and break them down.
Though it may not seem like it at first glance, this is actually a thriller and has a depth not seen many times before. The mystery is like a mist that slowly lightens and at the end of the first few episodes always leave you with a desire to watch the next and the next. This never ends and the anime always manages to keep you interested in it.
To summarise, Red Garden is a visually stunning with a interesting story that just makes you want more and more. The downside is that not everyone will appreciate the special art-style but for those who do gets to see a great story with deep life-like characters. Girl or boy (woman or man), either way I highly suggest that you watch it, for your own good. read more

TMGK and Red Garden are both series about a happy go lucky group of high schoolers who find themselves in an unusual situation and become unlikely friends (teammates?). They both have creepy settings and both episodic and series long stories. Although I wasn't a fan of Red Garden, I think others who enjoyed TMGK may enjoy the dead girls of Red Garden as well!
If dark horror is your thing check out Red Garden. With similar characters, and high school kids fighting monsters who were once human this show could be right up ypour alley.

Gantz and Red Garden have very similar plots albeit a little more different, They both feature peope who have died and are given another chance to live if they defeat certain monsters. However, if they die, they die forever.
Red Garden is Gantz for the girls! Really, it is a girly verson of the manly Gantz. Both of these series are a lot alike, and go well together! I think Red Garded is the spiritual sequel to Ganzt, done with a female touch. Both series feature people who just died (2 people in Gantz, 4 in Red Garden) who are forced to fight monsters or aliens to survive. If they can survive, they can return to their normal lives, otherise they're really dead this time. Gantz features a large cast of people who just died, and people drop like flies, while Red Garden is mostly just made up of the 4 girls, until you get towards the end. Both of these anime series are mature, dark, series with some focus on the "mystery" behind what happened to these people. Both series are by Studio Gonzo, and have english dubs by ADV studio/Amusement Park Media. Both have great opening music, from a genre of music that anime series normally don't use (a semi jazz song in Red Garden, and a rap song in Gantz), but the songs manage to capture the spirits of the shows completely. Plus their music just owns!
There are some differences though. Like Red Garden is more of a drama, with some action, while Gantz is more of an action series. Gantz has sex scenes, more blood, and lots more gore. While Red Garden has no sex scenes, and less blood and gore (but still very mature). Gantz is based off a still running manga, while Red Garden is an original anime, which Gonzo later ran a manga series based off of it.
If you like Gantz, you will like Red Garden, and vice-versa! Give these anime series a try! They are both very unique and very good!
