"I do work in the US. I'm a software engineer based in NYC now. I actually recently graduated from university, so this is my first time being an 'adult' with a place and an income, bills and taxes and whatnot."

That's what I do as well. I heard it's much better being a software engineer in the US than in the UK, with the salary there being $100k+ for a good engineer just starting out! Over here in the UK you can get to the end of your career without earning that much hehe. I remember when I started working and got my own place, one of the first things I did was start to relearn piano, which I'd learnt as a kid and completely forgot! Freedom and disposable income are great :D

Regarding A Silent Voice, I don't feel completely satisfied by it, but I think the melodrama is mostly fine. Some of it probably felt less justified because it didn't have time to tell its story in full. I gave it 8/10 and wrote a review of it while it's still fresh in my mind. Feel free to give it a read and let me know whether you agree with my opinions on it!

With Violet Evergarden, I'm most of the way through, and without giving any details away, I would say that if KyoAni managed to capture the superficial aspects of a slice of life with K-On, then they've managed to capture the spirit of the genre in Violet Evergarden. Really liking the fact that they appear to grown out of their moe phase now. It does leave me with a dilemma of having no clear "least favourite studio" now haha!

Thanks! Writing is definitely something I plan to continue doing - it's a useful skill to have and helps to sharpen and organise my thoughts even if I don't write much that anyone else might care about haha!

I also work in software! Are you working in the US?

I'm watching Violet Evergarden, a non-moe (!) slice of life that KyoAni has put out recently. It's actually been pretty good so far. I think maybe KyoAni has grown out of their moe-blob phase now? Also planning on watching A Silent Voice soon!

Things have been a bit hectic since we last spoke. I've gotten married since then and have changed jobs twice! I barely watch any anime these days, but I try to watch a few titles every year. I completely understand the lull - I've been under it for a couple of years now haha. Still not watching much, but I've got back into the rhythm of writing reviews and posted the my first one in over five years! I got stuck on a couple of writing projects, but decided to chisel away at them slowly while writing new things, and that's turned out to be fairly effective at rekindling my motivation in writing. It also helps my new job is much more laid back than my last one, which gives me time to daydream and think :P

How's your new job going?

Funny thing is, while I've not been watching much, I'm currently watching a KyoAni show! Even though I don't watch many of those, I always seem to be watching or just finished watching one while I'm in conversation with you lol.

Hey man, just saw your anime update in my feed and realised you were one of the few people I had long conversations with who is still alive! I've hardly been on MAL for the last couple of years, so just wanted to drop by and say hi!

I feel like I have commented here before, but since I saw your animelist right now, I just want to say your tags are very funny and interesting. I love it!!!

I hope you don't mind, I'm gonna give you a friend request because I genuinely like your opinion/anime taste.

Hey there.
I've taken interest in your "spice" Python wrapper for the MyAnimeList website.

I maintain a MAL club for developers and leisure-time programmers. We've got members like motoko/Ratan (2 devs of the Atarashiis), Drutol (dev of MALClient), Nekomata (dev of Jikan), among many others who develop interesting things.
While we might not look so active on the club page itself, someone posts on our Discord guild at least once a day.

Would you like to join? You've been invited but just in case:

I meant like partial differential equations. Was Calculus broken up into 3 semesters at the college you go to?

I've been following this ANN guy's write up of it on his own blog. Have a look if you can find the time. I find his analysis of it really eye-opening. I got the jist of the underlying themes while I was watching it, but missed a lot of the subtle details of the execution. I guess this is why KyoAni is held in such high regard (even if they do devote a lot of their efforts into what is in my opinion not very worthy causes lol): http://wrongeverytime.com/tag/hyouka/

Yep, it may not be my favourite, but it may very well be my favourite KyoAni show lol. I do think it's a very clever, well written character driven anime. I may have liked it even more if it wasn't for Chitanda suffering from Generic KyoAni Moe Disease which, in a show so focused on the characters, really dragged it down.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
