Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! 3

Kazuma Satou, former NEET and current reincarnated adventurer, finally returns home after the incident at the Crimson Demon village. He is joined by his ever-reliable companions: self-absorbed goddess Aqua, one-trick pony arch-wizard Megumin, and masochistic crusader Lalatina Ford "Darkness" Dustiness. Following their recent exploits, the party is one step closer to vanquishing the Demon King and his armies—a terrifying task that Kazuma is eager to ignore for as long as possible. Things, however, are not going as smoothly as the group would like; they are constantly racking up debt, getting sidetracked during missions, and falling into traps due to their recklessness and eccentricities.

As the party struggles with their perennial issues, they receive an invitation from a princess interested in hearing tales of the group's "heroic" deeds. Darkness' pleas to refuse the invitation only fire the others up to accept it, marking the start of yet another uncanny adventure with unforeseen consequences.

Only 3 episodes out at the time of writing, so is this really enough to judge this season so far?


YES!!!


Konosuba is more than an anime. More than an Isekai. More than a story, or a work of fiction. It is, simply put, a masterpiece. It is more than all these things. It is a life lesson. It is a grand metaphor on life itself! It teaches you to never take life seriously, and to always see the bright sides of things! Sometimes in life, you don't need a grand story, full of crazy twists and turns, or a story of grand proportion. You need a ... story, full of 4 incompetent, lovable idiots that always get the job done when push comes to shove. The Megumin spinoff that aired April of last year was entertaining in its own way, but it missed out on what makes Konosuba, 'Konosuba'. It missed the character dynamics, the interactions that stem from our 4 main characters. Sure, more Konosuba is great, but the way our main cast interacts and compliments each other with their personality, flaws, and gimmicks is something brilliant in its own right. I think Konosuba portrays the way people interact with their friends in real life the best, out of any anime I've ever seen. They tease, roast and joke with each other, but they do care for each other when the time calls for it, you know, like actual real human friends do! The voice acting work only reinforcing this narrative about their friendship they have, and you can tell every voice actor had a blast while recording their lines too! They actually have personalities too! They are believable. It's brilliant, and it just makes our cast a hell of a lot more memorable than your likes of generic swordsman #108!


Comedy anime is like finding a diamond in a cave full of coal, with the coal being 'walk in at the wrong time on a girl', or something along the lines of a quickly put together compilation you would see on the front page of youtube, so its good Konosuba is actually funny! Before we move on, yes, I will admit some of the jokes have me staring at the screen like I've been scorching in the desert for 17 hours without any water, but for the most part I do believe that the comedy is incredibly good across all seasons, the OVAs and the movie.


I also believe all the characters are well written, believable, and great for the most part. But Kazuma. Kazuma is on another level. He doesn't just speak for himself. He speaks for the people. He doesn't shy away from his sexual urges, or get flustered like your average Isekai protaganist, instead he subverts our expectations. OF COURSE HE WANTS TO RIDE THE WOMEN! He's no ideal hero that fights for justice, someone like Kirito and the other ones like him, or is he trying to live out in a world where he has everyone under control with sheer power alone, like Ainz, no. He's just a guy living out his best life in this fantasy world he has found himself in, and that is what makes him so brilliant. I believe that he is the best character to come out of this show, and is the most memorable anime character in recent years.


The humour in this season so far has been brilliant as well. Konosuba doesn't just take the jokes from the light novel, but uses something only the anime, as a medium can have. The voice acting, that compliments the bonds between the main 4. The animation, that compliments their actions, their personalities, and their tone, and even the episode intermissions (an example being near the end of episode 3), everything about Konosuba is brilliant, and I can say that so far, the anime is doing the source absolute justice. Some might have complaints about the animation being 'low - budget' or 'lazy', but this is how Konosuba usually does it, and I believe that the animation only further compliments the jokes that happen on screen. The facial expressions that are created from Konosuba are some of the most amazing things an anime can produce. I can only describe it, as pure entertainment value!


As far as story goes, its nothing special, the usual 'kill the evil lord taking over the land' sort of deal, but that's not what the focus of the anime is of. It's just entertainment, as I said. Eye candy. There is never a dull moment where I found myself wanting to skip ahead in the episode, or go on my phone while I watched. With a market full of generic Isekai, Konosuba is a breath of fresh air when it comes to the genre, and is brilliant in what it does, which is provide entertainment to the viewer. The staff has done a brilliant job so far this season, as they have done so far as well!


So yes, in conclusion, Konosuba is one of the best anime I have ever consumed in recent years. I would even go so far to say the best. While I believe it is a great show, it is also not for some people. Give it a shot, see what you think, if you like it, great! If not, great, skip it, move on! It's just a fun show overall, and one of the best produced in the last decade.


And yes, Kazuma is best girl too.

As a die hard fan of the series (completed the LNs and re-watched the series 5 times), I feel like this season has fallen off in comparison to previous adaptations and the source. It watered down what made the original series so endearing to focus on quick jokes and visual gags that make it feel like your average comedy.

At its core Konosuba is a goofy, adventure series that follows a group of close friends as they stray around in their silly world. It hardly took itself seriously and often meandered in its writing as it slowly built up to plot developments or jokes. The original ... adaptations (s1-2 and movie) do a good job at adapting this vibe. They progressed through the story, but made sure to include slow moments where the characters meandered. They did a good job at building up and executing the comedy, and even added their own flare that worked (pause gag, star wars text slide). They made sure to think about the characters and how they should interact with each other.

In comparison, the new season forgets most of what made Konosuba Konosuba, It rushes through the plot and skips a lot of the meandering and nuance from the LN. In ep1 alone they try to adapt 2 skipped chapters from previous arcs, then quickly start the arc at the end of the episode. They didn't even have an opening for the first few episodes as they wanted to push more plot. Comedy in this season is mostly quick jokes and visual gags that require no build up or character nuance. Due to the comedy being like this, most of the main cast is simplified or has skipped development.

For the average viewer, you will probably still enjoy it. For the psychopaths like me who actually read the books and understand what the series is about, this adaptation pales in comparison.

Nah bro, this shit fell off. I was going to pull some punches here because I am an old man full of regret and self-doubt. It could be that I'm just bitter, I don't know what's funny anymore and I should just shut up and go to the bingo on my 4-wheel scooter. Maybe that is all real and true but NAH BRO, THIS SHIT DONE FELL OFFFFFFFF!!!!!

Konosuba was amazing. It played with the isekai and fantasy genre so effortlessly. The gags were always funny despite themselves, the characters were endearing and consistently written and likeable and likeably animated. Everything about the production of this ... show in seasons 1 and 2 was complementary to the fun characters that on their default settings just interact with each other in such a way that they constantly spit roast the harem, fantasy, and isekai genres while being a pretty good entry in each category on merit. The animation style, the art style, the exaggerated expressions, the sound design, Megumin's random Sakuga explosions, the comedy, even the pervy stuff like when Kazuma assumes Darkness is part of the succubus dream service and acts all dominating and she was totally into it... konosuba has always been a harmonious ham sandwich of laughter and each episode a treasured bite. The world building always went kinda hard for me by revealing itself primarily through debacles and not really caring if you understand anything going on in the world overall as the viewer. Kazuma and the girls don't care either, they been chillin'.

The magic of the show was finding comedy in the gap between the potential, status, and random good fortune of the main cast who just cannot help but to turn it all to shit or a pyrrhic victory through narcissism, greed, perversion, and ego. Their faults always end up biting them in their collective asses time and time again, turning triumphs into catastrophes and making easy wins spastic fiascos. I was here for that shit. There was always this undertone in the show that everything was definitely going off the rails and getting ruined and you couldn't help but laugh because there is also this undertone that everything would just be so easy for them if they could somehow stop being a degenerate/crybabybimbo/masochist/egomaniac! That random URL of character traits I just listed clearly defines to anyone that has seen seasons 1 and 2 (and probably 3) Kazuma, Aqua, Darkness, and Megumin. These characters are fucking iconic and they were presented so well and interacted even better. The dialogue was always selling us on that core strength of the show. In season 3 it just really feels forced out. Because it feels forced and off-brand, that breaks immersion and makes me feel like these characters that have made me laugh so hard in their better moments, are being milked for their popularity. And that shit is corny as fuck and makes me frowny face.

The little sister lolibait premise? Corny as fuck.
The body swap artifact? Corny as fuck, used in a corny way for corny gags.
Darkness getting depressed and leaving the party or whatever? Corny as fuck.
Sneaking into the castle to steal the artifact? Corny as fuck.
Kazuma and Aqua at fine dining after getting all that money? Had its moments, but they overplayed that gag where they just freeze framed on each of their faces for like actually 10s, multiple times within a minute-ish? Corny as fuck!

I actively don't want to go back and remember what happened in season 3 because it just hit me as so damn corny and off-brand. It felt like someone was trying to capture the magic of the show and its characters on a much lower budget, with much less experience, and really didn't care if they did a good job. This season of konosuba has so far been way more in the spirit of that random Megumin spinoff, because like that show it doesn't seem to have a good grasp on what made konosuba great in the first place. Also, the production values on this show seem notably lower than previous seasons, the sound design is off and sticks out, the detail is lowered, the same expression is used for like 35% of the gags on multiple faces of characters within the gag which looks terrible. Best part of the season was the OP, and it is mid.

I could point out some moments that got a laugh out of me, but really I was expecting to hit the highs from previous seasons at least a handful of times. I wanted a hit of nostalgia, to feel like "konosuba is back, baby!" when I watched each episode the way I felt when I learned season 3 was coming out. None of that happened for me this time, my konosuba boner is at an all time low right now and that makes me sad.
