Really Old Anime You Can Watch Right Now
AnimeUnlisted
This is an on-going project.
=-=-= Overview =-=-=
The other day I stumbled across some really old anime posted to YouTube. I was inspired to do a little digging with this stack as the result.
Along the way, I discovered these interest stacks: "Japanese Animated Film Classics"
-- Part 1
https://myanimelist.net/stacks/2523
-- Part 2
https://myanimelist.net/stacks/2533
They link to the archives of the website: "Japanese Animated Film Classics" (JAFC) where you can watch the listed films.
https://animation.filmarchives.jp/en/works
Another stack with an eye towards historical significance, covering the earliest days through the early 60s::
"A Look Through the Beginnings of Japanese Animation"
https://myanimelist.net/stacks/90
This stack covers films that are available on YouTube but not at the JAFC site above. If you want to dive right in, here are two YouTube playlists. Despite the title, the second playlist only covers 1936-1938. A number of these videos appear to have been sourced from JAFC. Also note, there may be some mis-identifications or mistaken titles. For example, "[1917] Hanasaka Jijii" is actually an inferior version of "[1928] Hanasaka Jiisan".
-- "Early Japanese Animations [1917~1936]" (99 videos):
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGg-M0O-qdTSecRKMgk_z6nntfpOBNcnP
-- "Early Japanese Animation [1936~1963]" (6 videos)
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGg-M0O-qdTRYPDmOYtSBKMnKpmsXCq28
There are several YouTube videos that discuss early animation from Japan:
-- "The Early Years Of Anime"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dctj4qjr07o
-- "The History of Anime & Japan" The story starts in the 17th century.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8lW6buDGBY
-- "Anime (1917 - 1945)" Continuing through the war. Short clips from notable anime in chronological order.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSVlBs8lJoE
-- "Post-War Anime: The History of Animation & Japan" After the war until 1963 (Astro Boy).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQlm99BajH4
The stack is sorted chronologically, newest to oldest. There's something wrong with several of the MAL entries as they don't sort correctly. Examples:
-- 1954 "Hana to Chou"
-- 1935 "Shoujouji no Tanuki-bayashi Ban Danemon"
-- 1934 "Dekobou no Jidousha Ryokou"
There are no subtitles unless otherwise noted.
I haven't done an exhaustive search for videos on YouTube. I've included a few cases where there are alternate versions, but there are probably instances I missed. And there are probably a number of videos I simply didn't uncover. Still, I hope you enjoy this fascinating trip to the past as much as I have.
=-=-= Credits =-=-=
A number of YouTube accounts contribute to this stack. These all appear to be from individuals, not official channels. Plus, this is YouTube so videos can disappear without a trace.
-- ccm111, 464 subs, 116 videos
https://www.youtube.com/@ccm1112
This is the source of the two playlists linked in the first section.
-- Erald of Winterhold, 13 subs, 34 videos

-- Gragabaragab Ragatabaaratabart, 92 subs, 10 videos

https://www.youtube.com/@marvelousmelmo
-- Milton Knight, 16.2K subs, 361 videos
https://www.youtube.com/@buxombeautease
There are 128 videos on the playlist titled "Asian Cartoons". The misnomer notwithstanding, there are titles MAL has decided qualify as anime.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1uoHbzYQbsXf2Spd6zYZTrohEzrc5DXr

=-=-= Epilogue =-=-=
I'll gladly take any comments on films I may have missed of mis-identified. I would love it if some Japanese film scholar could contribute accurate information on these older films.
I have happily claimed "Completed" status for those that I watched through to the end, but I didn't try to come up with a score. I have little basis for judgjng any technical aspects of the productions. I don't understand Japanese so can only grasp the basics of the stories. And I'm not comfortable applying any moral standards, even for things like propaganda. So no scores from me.
The anime trope of cat characters must be rooted in some deeper cultural phenomenon.
-- 1931 Kuro Nyago (The Black Cat)
-- 1932 Nyago Dance (The Cat Purr Dance)
-- 1947 Suteneko Tora-chan (Abandoned Cat Little Tora)
BTW, did you know you can search for Japanese titles? Searching for "び助物語" will get you to "Issunboushi: Chibisuke Monogatari" (Tiny Chibisuke's Big Adventure). Good on you, MAL.

Is this the first anime where the OP hero defeats the Demon Lord?
The narration was either cleaned up significantly or re-recorded or maybe even a modern addition. One of the latter two seems most likely to me.

"Momotaro" is a popular story. These are just some of the related videos YouTube recommended:
"Momotaro, the Peach Boy Kamishibai Story with Miss Lee Ann from the Bedford Public Library"
