It's based in a novel called High Streamer. The first version of the script was rejected, but was later published as a novel called Beltorchika's Children, there is a manga version of this one too.

The original Gundam actually was a failure during its broadcast, the success came in the re-runs, and so Sunrise decided to try again wit this recap trilogy.
I don't think the original series has stood the test of time, so i recommend these movies instead.

A Prequel to the original anime, but i don't recommend you to start with this, because if you do it you will get spoiled one of the biggest plot twist in the original show. Futhermore, it's not exactly accurate of it, because it's adapted from a manga (same title btw) that retells the original show with some changes and aditions to the story, so it's really a big mistake to start here.
