Mahou Shoujo is usually/mostly about the friendship of a group of girls going against some type of evil, and believe me, I love friendship based Mahou Shoujo, but I sometimes also like some romance in my shows! Here I'll list some shows that I've watched, and others that I haven't but I've heard they are good! Sorry I can't give that much comments on the ones I haven't watched, but you're welcome to tell me your thoughts! Magical girl talk is always welcome.
★ I'll not be including sequels or remakes, but I'll mention them.
Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica
TV, 2011, 12 eps Me:- Author:8
Ok, ok, I know what you may be thinking: "this show has no romance, it can be read as strong friendship!". And yes, you are correct, but it could also be read as a romance. ESPECIALLY after the movie, that's where it completely convinced me this has romance. Other than that, this show has magnificent visuals and story. Dark magical girl done right.
Cardcaptor Sakura
TV, 1998, 70 eps Me:- Author:9
Hohohoho, this is a nostalgic one huh? The romance here is so adorable, makes you want to root for these kids. There are many iconic scenes that will make your heart throb. As a show itself, the characters are all lovable and Sakura is truly amazing as a protagonist.
Princess Tutu
TV, 2002, 38 eps Me:- Author:10
Finally an excuse to recommend my favourite Mahou Shoujo lol. So, the romance in this has great development and twists, highs and lows. As everything in this show, it's kinda deep. A pretty existential cheerful show, this is.
Full Moon wo Sagashite
TV, 2002, 52 eps Me:- Author:8
Drama, do you like drama? Because this has LOTS of it. Twists and turns, makes you cry sometimes, and it's not only the romance. It is pretty heartwarming though!
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon
TV, 1992, 46 eps Me:- Author:10
The classic! The one! Sailor Moon! If you like magical girls, then you probably have already watched this one. You haven't? Well, you could give it a try! The main romance in this is very sweet, but sometimes it has DRAMA. Over all, everything is enjoyable.
★ Also, you know, there is Sailor Moon Crystal (readaptation and/or reboot?), which has the same amount of romance. The first two season weren't my favourite thing in the world, but from there on it's amazing.
Kaitou Saint Tail
TV, 1995, 43 eps Me:- Author:8
Ah, yes, my favourite Christian Related Thief Magical Girl. This type of romance is sometimes kinda tragic, and also frustrating? But don't worry, it'll still make you want a romance like this yourself. If you like magicians then you'll probably like it.
Hime-chan no Ribbon
TV, 1992, 61 eps Me:- Author:-
Haven't watched this one, but people seem to like it :D
Uchuu Patrol Luluco
TV, 2016, 13 eps Me:- Author:8
Short and sweet, perfect for a boring evening. It is exactly because it's so short that the romance might seem way too fast-paced. Still, this has one of my favourite romance tropes so I couldn't leave it out.
Akazukin Chacha
TV, 1994, 74 eps Me:- Author:8
I'll admit that the romance in this isn't thaaaaat prominent. It's mostly a comedy show. Even the romance is taken as a joke, but I guess that is part of its charm? Either way, the characters are all likeable (except one particular mermaid maybe), and it is really funny. Expect a lot of word play puns.
Sugar Sugar Rune
TV, 2005, 51 eps Me:- Author:8
Charming, very cute show. This is a dramatic romance, but also sugary sweet. It is well developed, and you'll be happy with their interactions. The magic of friendship is the highlight, the protagonists are so lovable. A 2000's show for sure.
Lady Jewelpet
TV, 2014, 52 eps Me:- Author:-
I haven't watched this one, but I've heard this is one of the best in the Jewelpet franchise. The shows in this franchise aren't completely connected, so you can watch them individually. I will say, the designs are SO cute.
Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne
TV, 1999, 44 eps Me:- Author:7
Ah, yes, my second favourite Christian Related Thief Magical Girl. The characters in this show are so amazing, mostly the way they are written. That is also why the romance and struggles feel genuine. Expect drama on all levels.
Magic Knight Rayearth
TV, 1994, 20 eps Me:- Author:8
It TECHNICALLY doesn't revolve around romance, but it is really sweet. The couples are 100% adorable, might make you cry. The action and adventure RPG are the most prominent part, but as all CLAMP works, the characters are a focal point.
Jewelpet Twinkle☆
TV, 2010, 52 eps Me:- Author:8
Sweet, SO SWEET. I couldn't really describe this as anything but the beauty of a first love, your heart might die at the sweetness. This is part of the Jewelpet franchise, and surprisingly deep for a kids show. The magic system is also pretty well explained.
Mai-HiME
TV, 2004, 26 eps Me:- Author:-
I haven't watched this one, and I didn't knew it had romance in it! A nice surprise. Well, at least it has the girls love tag, so we'll have to believe that.
Shugo Chara!
TV, 2007, 51 eps Me:- Author:6
Everyone's favourite problematic romantic triangle, mostly because one of the members is rather old compared to the other two. That's such a shame, considering it is mostly very adorable in general :(. A very cheerful show for sure, unlock your heart!
Mahou no Tenshi Creamy Mami
TV, 1983, 52 eps Me:- Author:-
An absolute classic, but I haven't watched it. It is veeeery pretty looking :)
Nurse Angel Ririka SOS
TV, 1995, 35 eps Me:- Author:7
The romance in this one isn't precisely very very romantic, but it has its pretty moments. I think there could have been more development in some aspects, but it's still very enjoyable :). The kids in this show are so physically hurt that it hurts me oh no. But don't worry, everyone should be fine, right...?
Kamichama Karin
TV, 2007, 26 eps Me:- Author:7
You might know this one from a meme where the protagonist has a silly face. But like, this is a LOT more interesting than that. It has a lot of heart, it's a shame it was so weirdly adapted and some stuff didn't quite make sense. The romance is so adorable, and gothic too lol. One day I'll read the manga to get the full experience.
Yes! Precure 5
TV, 2007, 49 eps Me:- Author:8
Ok um, yeah, this has romance but like um, the "main" romance is kinda not ok. Student-teacher relationship, though the teacher is actually a magical fairy? You know, I'm not comfortable with this romance, but if you decide to overlook the clearly romantic tones then it could be seen as a close frienship. I think the secodary romance is better. The sequel has better romance. Anyways, the girls' friendship is definetly the superior part of this show, go go girls!
Mahou no Stage Fancy Lala
TV, 1998, 26 eps Me:- Author:-
I haven't watched it, but I love the concept ♡
Ultra Maniac
TV, 2003, 26 eps Me:- Author:8
An underrated classic. The romance is a focus of this show. It is also very comedic. The friendship these girls have is so pure :'')
Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch
TV, 2003, 52 eps Me:- Author:7
Sigh, the childhood memories...A retelling of The Little Mermaid, but add magical girls and idols to the mix! The romance is of course very important in this one, and the songs are absolute hits.
Shin Shirayuki-hime Densetsu Prétear
TV, 2001, 13 eps Me:- Author:7
This girl lives in a mansion, yet she receives emotional damage :(. You could say this is Snow White, but make it a magical girl. Sometimes funny, sometimes dramatic, this is considered to be one of the best Mahou Shoujo.
Tokyo Mew Mew
TV, 2002, 52 eps Me:- Author:6
Animals + aliens + enviromentalism + magical girls. It might sound like random things to put together, but it actually makes a great combination! There is a lot of romantic interests for the main girl, however somehow none of them quite satisfied me? Still, It's definetly not the worse, you probably will enjoy at least one of the guys. Friendship between the girls is so wholesome.
★ Tokyo Mew Mew New, the reboot/readaptation/I don't know is pretty much the same in terms of romance, but I actually enjoyed it more LOL. The romance (or alluded romance) between two of the girls is more prominent and very cute.
Nanatsu-iro★Drops
TV, 2007, 12 eps Me:- Author:-
Haven't watched it, but the main girl has such a cute design.
Ai Tenshi Densetsu Wedding Peach
TV, 1995, 51 eps Me:- Author:6
The openings of this are fire. The romances have an interesting chemistry, even though the concept of girls being magical brides is kinda weird (?). But yeah, this is so entertaining for no reason. Angels and demons, how cool!
Ai to Yuuki no Pig Girl Tonde Buurin
TV, 1994, 51 eps Me:- Author:-
Honestly, the concept is so funny. I'll watch this one day.
