This is probably closer to the middle ground of what, tonally, an RPG campaign should aim for - starting fairly comedic, and moving toward serious as the storyline moves on - you'll notice that the campaigns in Critical Role have a similar arc, both through deliberate action by Matt Mercer and player engagement by the group.

Useful inspiration for how to deal with a setting that the players are intimately familiar with - the protagonists of the anime are very familiar with the setting of the MMO they're trapped in now, but enough little things (plus a few large things) have changed to keep the players on their toes - and that information is communicated to the characters in a way that GMs can learn from.
