Kaiju No. 8 is your typical 2020s shounen anime. There's really not much to be said here, lots of hype, lots of power scaling, lots of unfunny jokes, and lots of tropes. Overall, it’s not bad, but not good either. It lacks soul and personality. The Kaiju are uninteresting, the soldiers are uninteresting, and the main hero and heroine are just as uninteresting as almost every other character.
There’s no real character development here. Not once do they try to explore Kafka’s dual nature (Kaiju and Human), except in the last episode, and even then, in a very rushed and unnatural way. The emotional bond between Kafka and Mina is insignificant. At first, it seems like something happened and Mina now hates Kafka, as they always appear distant. But no, their relationship remains the same. There’s no tension, no character growth, nothing to be resolved, making it ultimately uninteresting.
Both the Defense Force and the Kaiju are uninteresting. There’s never a moment where you wonder how the soldier's armor works or how the Kaiju's core, powers, and mind function, because the anime simply doesn’t care about it. It doesn't seem to be as important as constantly throwing out random power-scaling numbers.
Also, there's no real threat at no point do the Kaiju feel like an actual danger to humanity. I think you get the idea: this is a generic shounen anime targeted at teenage boys, and nothing more than that. It certainly doesn’t live up to the hype and definitely doesn’t deserve an 8/10 score.
