Story – 6,5/10
Girl Friends is a Girl’s Love manga about the love story of Akko and Mari, the main characters. Its love plot is well-built, and the story focuses a lot more on romance than other secondary and accessory things. The story also fills our need for wholesomeness; although it isn’t very engaging as a whole, the 4th volume is enticing and does grip us in our very seats. One also does not quite understand the existence of a 5th volume, as if it had ended in the 4th, it would have been alright as well – it almost feels stretched.
The dialogues are uninteresting in general, and the story loses its touch when it focuses on plot lines other than the main one, although this doesn’t happen very often. The story is also foreseeable, such as its ending. There are no elements that render it a memorable experience. There are no sexually explicit scenes, other than some (rare) naked breasts.

Art – 5/10
In general, the art style in Girl Friends is profoundly average – be it the scenarios, landscapes, comic relief scenes, or character interactions. The character design is also average, but at least the characters are recognisable from one another. A problem with Girl Friend is definitely the page composition: it is just too stuffed with things and minor dialogue that doesn't add to the overall scenario.

Characters – 6,5/10
There is a big focus on the love between Akko and Mari, and thus, these characters are better developed. The rest of the secondary and minor characters just exist out of necessity – for the story not to solely exist on two characters – but they play no role whatsoever. Their friends exist as a way to give the main stage to the main characters – in the sense of a non-Akko and a non-Mari.

Enjoyment – 6/10
Girl Friend’s enjoyment is as high as an ordinary Girl’s Love story can provide. The story is foreseeable, although entertaining to read, because of the well-played-out romantic dynamics between the main characters. The art style is average and doesn’t add to the enjoyment of the story; in fact, the page composition hinders it. The feeling of a story being also stretched doesn’t help. In the end, Girl Friends isn’t a bad Girl’s Love, but it just isn’t memorable, which helps sustain a mixed feelings stamp.
