I think Code Geass is an excellent piece of storytelling. The fights and worldbuilding were great but it really shines with its characters and storytelling. Despite them being totally different genres I would compare it to Death Note in how they're presented and would definitely recommend this if you enjoy the "edge of your seat" type of writing Death Note brings.

Lelouch is easily my favourite anime protagonist and is definitely a massive part of what makes Code Geass so great - throughout the show he remains well written and engaging. He's anything but boring, so if you're the type of person who hates the flat, self insert male leads you won't find that here at all.

I think sometimes the show can get a little confusing or seem like its loosing itself but really its the type of thing you just have to give a chance to see where it goes. Sometimes the things that happen don't seem significant in the moment but have really good and satisfying payoffs that change your whole perspective on the last few episodes (a lot of the time, Lelouch is tricking the audience as well as the other characters.) To be honest, its all worth watching just for how phenomenal the end of it is.

For canon content only watch "Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion" and "Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2". Lelouch of the resurrection mostly follows the canon content but is created as a sequel to the recap movies rather than the main series, so there's a few big details that don't really make sense if you only watch the canon series (and while still enjoyable, isn't as satisfying of an ending to the show as R2.)
