I've heard this series takes a lot of criticism because the plot shows up in only for the last two episodes, and also because it builds this beautiful, post-apocalyptic world that it never explores. So many people write it off as "bad" because the show doesn't go down the same well-worn path you would expect a futuristic military story to follow.

But I think that the creators of this anime specifically tried to avoid that Star Wars-esque story arch because they wanted to tell a more realistic tale. Not everyone is going to be Shinji or Luke Skywalker and save the universe with his inner strength.

How do people (young women, in this case) cope in a land torn apart by war? How does it affect their everyday lives? What do they think of what happened in the past (very well done in Sora no Woto with the angel myths/flame guardian legend)? Do they find solace in the church, in music like Rio, or in each other, like Felicia? The situation of humanity in this world is so messed up; how have people adjusted? How can someone who's seen such terrible things, like Felicia has, find happiness? How do you deal with the devastation that follows after every giant mecha/war anime series ends?

Well it turns out that even when the hero's out saving the world, the rest of us still have to do laundry and find a way to smile. And that's what the series is about.

Well, that and subtle fanservice. I love me some implied lesbian rape.
