Minor plot set-up spoilers.
Recently, I’ve wondered why I’ve been actively avoiding the gender bender or body swap genre, since I used to read it so long ago; however, this manga provided me the reason for that: it’s just f*cking stupid. Don’t get me wrong, there are numerous of good attributes that can come from the trope such as comedy… and comedy, but that’s about it, since characters are never worth or developed much, or they are done so in an idiotic plot device manner, which this does.
I guess I’ll praise this a bit: The comedy is somewhat good: Yes, it is corny and cringy, however, it’s still pretty fun to read. Besides for that though, there’s just not much this manga does differently or distinctly which will cause it to be memorable or lovable.
Cliches of cliche, tropes of trope, every single blueprint of an absolute train wreck of a romcom has been incorporated into this manga. Redeeming the fmc? Yup. Drawn-out misunderstandings that the plot will revolve around for absolutely no reason at all? You betcha. Developments? Hard to say, but the manga definitely doesn’t look like it will have the slightest bit of any. Love triangle? Do I even need to answer that? Here’s a sad detail: I could list five, ten more cliches or unexciting tropes this manga employs despite only reading two mediumish-long chapters. Yet, in each one, somehow and someway, there has been no unique twist or personal take, but rather, each chapter felt like a fever dream of generics.
With good art, characters and their personalities are illuminated and “come to life”; this is a simple truth — no matter how much I like “poor” art stories, it does not pertain the same detail of emotional conveyance that a manga with mesmerizing art will. Despite that, this manga somehow missed every single opportunity to add detail and depth to its characters; truthfully, every character is shallow with a set in function, and they don’t feel realistic or act naturally — it’s hard to explain, but if you know what I’m talking about, then you know.
Validation to never read another gender bender manga ever again — that is this manga’s purpose. I was going to click off, seeing that cursed tag, however, I read it anyway because the community called this trash, and I love trashy romcoms like no other. Save yourself the brain cells, save your sanity, save your taste, this manga is not it; it provides some good humor, but it certainly fails to create a captivating story with captivating characters.
