Gunnm (Manga) add (All reviews)
May 22, 2023
Battle Angel Alita (Gunnm) is a classic of science fiction made in the mid 90s. Since I'm interested in sci-fi, I thought I would give it a try. This was actually my first sci-fi manga that I've ever read. I can confidently say that I'm not disappointed.

Story (8/10)
The story follows Alita (a.k.a Gally) who was found by a doctor, Daisuke Ido, who specializes in cyborg repairs, thus he builds her a new body. She awakens her desire to fight as soon as she becomes a hunter-warrior which was Ido's side job. They live in Beneath – a place that is inferior to Zalem. Zalem is basically above them and superior in every way possible.
The story seems to be simple at first – the only goal of Alita is to figure out who she was before. However, after it unravels a lot of questions whose answers I had been patiently waiting for before I finished reading. Surroundings and circumstances change a lot, so the story always has something new to offer and isn't repetitive.

Characters (6/10)
This seems to be the only weakness of the manga, but it's still not that bad. They somewhat develop as characters; some a little more, some a little less, but none of them stand out. As the story becomes more complex, characters do too. However, the complexity of characters can't compare to the one that the story has and I have to say the same about creativity.
Throughout the story you're not able to discover about and relate much to the main character, so don't even get me started when it comes to side characters.

Art (9/10)
Maybe I overrated this section, but art truly is amazing. It meant a lot to me because there were lots of fights and due to the great art they were easy to follow.
Of course, there were some moments where the art wasn't at its best, but that wasn't a big deal.

Personal enjoyment (8/10)
When rating, I always add a bit of subjective opinion. I still try to be objective though, but I consider my personal enjoyment important. I enjoyed reading this manga because it was interesting. I have to admit, some moments were a little bit boring, but there weren't many. When I look back I realize that they were necessary for the story.

Overall (7,75 – 8)
An interesting fact is that I collected physical copies and I really liked the process of buying one by one – it was exciting.
I hope this review made you less hesitant about reading this manga.
