"heartfelt anime but not super lighthearted"

To Your Eternity brings slice of life, action, fantasy, and existentialism all into one show. While the animation is not as good in its second half of the first season, the story explores different genres and ideas throughout its course. What's most interesting to me is not just how it explores different genres, but how it really is a set of stories that express the aspirations, struggles, and experiences of people in humanity's course throughout the years as seen through the lens of a single person. In this sense, To Your Eternity is a story of both the "little picture" and "big picture" of humanity--tells the individual lives of people in a way that gets to the bigger picture of the happiness and sadness of life and death. It's a bit hard for me to describe in more concrete terms without spoiling it more, but I definitely recommend the show if you want to watch something that is both interesting in plot and the overall messages/themes it might communicate to you about life. I would not recommend the show though if you'd like a more comedic watch (this show can get pretty sad), want consistently great animation, or want a more singular, streamlined story and set of characters.
