Takemicchy is an unbelievably stupid protagonist on paper and in application and it bleeds into the time travel mechanics. He basically does nothing to change the course of events but things drastically take a turn anyway because the author felt like it. Its like watching the climax of a JoJo fight but it skips "ah so you think you've won..." posturing and explanation of what the protag did to win and skips straight to something absurd. In an important fight Takemicchi teleports onto the back of a 6 foot tall delinquent and chokes him out despite suffering heavy injuries and being extremely weak by comparison. In the climax of a future battle in the manga Takemicchy has a gun pointed to his forehead with an injured arm and just glares at the assailant. The guy loses his nerve, shoots him in the foot instead, after which Takemicchy teleports in front of him and punches him so hard the guy falls on his ass and drops his gun. Then he limps passed a crosswalk and is randomly run over by a truck and dies. You can't make this garbage up. Takemicchy also will have long dialogues about how he needs to get stronger or how he has to help people literally as his friends are being beaten to death. He does nothing, contributes nothing, yet the show rewards him with everything anyway and it sucks to watch this actual bottom feeder take up so much screen time.
The animation is actually quite nice for this period as the focus is on a lot of big group fistfights all hand drawn and not at all bogged down by exposition. With modern anime and everyone in uniforms the expectation is for there to be a lot of 3DCGI in the background but Tokyo Revengers does none of that except for the expected cars. That's a lot more than you can say of most mid budget shonens from the last 10 years and I can recommend it for that. However the protagonist is frustratingly incompetent and refuses to apply himself in any capacity even though the show acts like he does. When he gets down on all fours and starts crying you know a Deus Ex Machina is coming, was the joke I made or the entire run of the anime.
