FLCL (Anime) add (All reviews)

What an obscenely iconic anime. No really. Its pretty fascinating seeing how much the ratings for what is essentially a cult classic series vary. I can't really blame anyone for not liking this, as for me I'm definitely in the boat of. Damn, this is special to me on an emotional level.

So what you have here is much of the same staff responsible for neon genesis evangelion putting all of their resources into the passion project of some random horny nerd they found on the street one day. Now while a general lack of substance, hyperactive attitude, vulgar jokes and erotic visuals are all very representative of FLCL. Its all just embelishment for a surprisingly tender and authentic coming of age story, with ordinary characters who are implemented so well into an absurdist otaku fantasy that it comes the whole way around turning the infantile imagery into symbolic representations of the adult themes that the protagonist, Naota Nandaba is now coming to terms to. I love how unified the themes and stories of these characters are despite how stupidly incomprehensible the show is throughout its entire run time.

The presentation is a more than perfect accompanyment for this. A match made in heaven. being an anime from the very early 2000's it is totally influenced by the visual concepts and styles that were popular in 2001, thick outlines, exaggerated facial features and at times exaggerated proportions, which on top of screaming of this period's urban art. is beyond fittingly accompanied by the grungey, poppy garage rock discography of 'the pillows'

They could have picked an objectively, smarter band than them, true. Groups like number girl or bloodthirsty butchers were leagues above them on a musical level (source: dude trust me)

They could not have picked a more appropriate band than the pillows though, it would be like giving pepsi to a coke main on a pizza dinner, for lack of a better allegory.

Personally at least, I could endlessly praise FLCL and all that I love about it, yet its objective quality is completely unimportant to me, I love it the exact way it is and wouldn't have it otherwise.
What else is there to say? 2001 forever.
