The characters while all loveable aren't anything amazing or even too unique but yet somehow they're all memorable. Goku is just a loveable guy who somehow manages to defy the odds again and again. Vegeta is the generic rival who gets ruined by his pride a little too much but you love him for it. Frieza is just an selfish overconfident prick, and hardly any anime villain really matches the level of fear and hype like he gets, sure he seems a little generic but that's because he kind of set the mold for future villains. I could go on but I think you get it, nothing is absurdly unique or clever but it all just works.
After watching Hunter x Hunter i realized that the power system in this show is a little, well, goofy. This show probably has the least deep and least thought out system of abilities and power in all of shonen but there isn't really anything wrong with that, in fact in a way because it is so generic it is almost unique. Unlike something like Naruto or Hunter x Hunter where battles usually come down to trading blows and utilizing unique and special abilities to create advantages, Dragon Ball Z just throws two really swole dudes who shoot laser beams infront of eachother and says fight, and I know that might sound really stupid but it's actually a lot of fun just watching two goliaths just trade heavy blows to the point of exhaustion. When someone throws a hard punch or kick or whatever in this show you can feel the weight of how hard they just swung, it's honestly great.
Sure it's kinda dumb and a little old but it is a really good time I've never not had fun watching the action in this show.
