Theres gonna be some spoilers.
It just isn't good. Maybe it just isn't for me but I enjoyed all the other Dragon Ball series this one just has so many shortcomings that it is hard to sit down and have the dumb fun that the rest of franchise offers. Super took all the worst qualities from Dragon Ball Z and made a show out of it.
Before I just berate this show it did do a few things right. The addition of Beerus as a character was not bad, he is an enjoyable character and his relationship with with his brother is a little cute, but
...
Beerus opens a whole can of worms that still hurt this show drastically, more on that later though. Super also tried to make a psuedo deep villain, they failed miserably at it but Dragon Ball never really had an equivalent to someone like Pain and with Zamasu they at least tried. Bringing back Frieza in the long run may have been the best move made in the entire show, granted I am biased as he is my favorite villain in all of Dragon Ball, but Frieza while starting off very weakly written ends becoming probably the most developed character in the show by the end and he is like the only guy every doing anything clever.
The story is very weak, just about every arc has zero stakes, nothing is at risk, or if there is the villains or the narrative do an awful job at making it appear meaningful at all. Whatever happens to be at risk is usually something of little to no personal value to any of the protagonists and because its Dragon Ball death is practically meaningless, not that this is necessarily anything new with the franchise but in this series it becomes overwhelmingly obvious. So with death being meaningless and no villain threatening any part of the cast on a personal level every battle and hardship starts to just feel meaningless. Many of the battles especially early on hold literally zero weight because Beerus and Whis are always just watching over every outcome ensuring that the protaganists cannot actually ever really lose. The points where Beerus isn't ensuring victory aren't any more intense though as they are either set in an tournament that is either meaningless or just completely littered with pointless fights against countless no names for literal hours.
There are only three arcs in the entire show where if the protagonist loses something bad MIGHT happen, which are the Battle of Gods arc, The Zamasu arc, and the Tournament of power, and still none these create any suspense. Yes Beerus is a good character in a vacuum but he just doesn't work as the primary antagonist in a long episodic show like Dragon Ball, yes he says he will destroy earth but he never gives off any sense of malice, he isn't really a villain he is just so much stronger than anyone that he has no reason to care or regret his actions, he is literally a god after all. The only reason Beerus even shows up in first place is because he is looking to have a fun fight with Goku.
Zamasu had the most potential to be something really memorable and they just completely missed the landing on him. Say what you will about how poorly written his arc was, at least he created suspense. His views and goals were just disgustingly evil, he is literally the only antagonist in the entire show that isn't just there for the sake of having a fight *cough* Frieza and Beerus *cough*, Zamasu at least has an actual motive besides just becoming stronger or having fun. He is honestly the only real villain in all of Super but he is just ruined by how weak his development is, faulty logic, and just bad story telling. There are so many plotholes in his arc that it just begins to make the whole story fall apart. Then halfway through watching his arc you're going to realize that there aren't actually any stakes or anything at risk in this arc either because it is all taking place in an alternate universe that none of the primary protaganists live in. RIP Zamasu you had potential but it was just never realized.
Then there is Jiren, and good god what joke of a character he is. His only personality trait is that he is strong, and yes I know that strong isn't even a personality but somehow the writers wrote him so unbeliievably bad that it is his personality. All he is is just strong nothing else. Is he evil? Not really, I mean he is kind of a selfish dick, but no not really. What is his motive? To become stronger. Why is he so strong? Because one day he was weak and then he got strong. Is there any reason to root for this guy? Not at all. Is he at least relatable? Not in the slightest. I have honestly never seen a worse excuse for a antagonist than this. He hardly talks if at all for most of the episodes he appears in and for 90% of his own arc he just sits there saying and doing literally nothing. If he wasn't in the show I would have thought he was satire.
Well maybe the beloved and iconic Dragon Ball characters make the show worth watching, right? Not at all, if you aren't Goku or Vegeta you are relegated to sitting on side lines shouting exposotion while they fight. This is pretty much the Goku Vegeta Show with a slint hint of Frieza.
The show just isn't good everything wrong with previous Dragon Ball series just gets far worse, just don't watch it.
