The story revolves around an extremely rational japanese salaryman who gets killed and then reincarnated by "god" into an alternate planets World War I. Thing is, he's reborn into the body of a girl who is abandoned. After growing up in an orphanage, it is discovered she holds great magic potential and is thus recruited into the military of the Empire, which is an alternate version of Germany.
Now, I know this sounds ridiculous and the artwork and previews you may have seen will appear absurd with a tiny girl being a military officer in what's effectively an alternate Nazi army, but trust me, the series is so well done, you all but forget the absurdity of it.
The production values are absolutely amazing. Great animations and absolutely superb sound quality. They went above and beyond in making sure you actually feel like you're watching a WW1 footage because of all the sounds of the artillery, the explosions, the bullet hits and so on.
Very few military anime manage to depict war and combat this spectacularly.
The story itself is suitably unique and despite being fairly simplistic, very well done. The characters are solid and the main character has a very powerful, rational personality that never wavers, only adapts to the circumstances. It's very enjoyable to get away from the anime cliche of an ignorant, incompetent child MC and instead have the MC be a child with the confidence and demeanor of a 50 year old military vet.
If you're looking for a high production value military anime, you absolutely cannot miss this show.
