It is very rare to see a hentai struggle with problems that hentai's don't usual struggle with. What do I mean? Most hentai's never manage to write a fulfilling story, and that is just something I have come to except in my time as a hentai watcher (as reflected by how I don't let the story affect the score of the hentai as much when compared to characters and art). "Colosseum no Senki: Another Story", the hentai we are talking about today, manages to write a fairly good story but in my eyes doesn't understand how to implement NTR into it's later portion, without it seeming forced into the narrative similar to the genre's main purpose itself.
Story: 8/10
Colosseum no Senki has a very solid premise in my eyes. To sum up, it revolves around a lady of royal origin attempting to escape from a dangerous town but first has to learn the ways of being a prostitute to generate enough cash to leave the town. Most of the first episode is amazing and great character building for the main heroine too, Vastia, Scarlett Ellis. That all goes downhill in episode 2. Basically it turns into a rape session for the last episode. I have said many many times in my reviews that I don't mind NTR as long as it is done right, and this hentai defiantly leans far away from the latter. The NTR is not enough to ruin the great premise and story set up but it is enough to drop what could have been a masterpiece of story execution.
Art and Animation: 8/10.
The art is similar to the story, while being really solid there are some noticeable flaws. I have reviewed quite a few Office Takeout hentai's (infact my last hentai was an office takeout show). The art of the hentai is actually really good if I am being honest. Everything is drawn very well and the proportions are matching for the character types. This however is what I feel brings to the downside of the coloring. The coloring makes this anime feel older then it should and the whole "dark" atmosphere is really not helping. This hentai was barely made 3 years ago yet it feels much older, which is not a good sign. The choreography is good but nothing to write home about. Episode 1 has some really good angles for shmex scenes but like most of the show this goes down hill in Episode 2, where most of the shots feel... let's just at very un-inspired. Good thing is the animation makes up for some of these mentioned down-comings.
Sound: 8/10.
It's good. But I do feel some of the performances are awkward at times and the music can be distractedly loud at times.
Character: 5/10.
The female lead is actually the most mixed bag ever, which is why I gave this section a 5/10. On on hand, she has some real solid motivation and like I said before I love the character building done in the first episode. But as soon as episode 2 comes around she loses everything that makes her so interesting and well-developed and just becomes a damsel-in-distress. Until.... The final minutes of the episode where she is told something (I won't say what for the sake of spoils) and turns into A FUCKING WARRIOR IN A MATTER OF SECONDS. That is absurdly garbage character writing and that is why I gave her a 5. Oh but looks wise... she is great and has big anime tiddies so that's somewhat of a plus :)
Enjoyment: 5/10.
I enjoyed most of the first episode, it has good character writing, well directed shmex scenes and at the time likable characters... Until Episode 2 rolls in and changes my thoughts completely with bad NTR, bad characters and bad directing. So this is quite mixed for me in terms of enjoyment.
Overall: 6/10.
Overall, its a decent hentai. I may have ragged on it quite a bit but it does have it's good moments and while I would not recommend the series as a whole, I do recommend atleast watching the first episode as that is as good as any point to stop watching at.
