There's a certain art to writing an OP MC. When done well it makes for a very enjoyable show. Prime examples of this include the expertly written Saitama and Mob from genius writer ONE. So why is it that this show fails so spectacularly in writing an OP MC and as a show in general? Let's break it down.

Characters are only made interesting by their flaws or their challenges. Saitama faces existential dread wondering what his purpose in life is after achieving the overwhelming strength he desired. This challenge of finding fulfillment in life is universal of the human experience and achieves the incredible feat of making a person with godlike strength feel human and relatable. Mob is a kid going through puberty and trying to deal with all of these new emotions he's experiencing while also possessing godlike powers that are directly influenced by his emotions. Once again this makes him feel relatable as we all went through this and felt new emotions that made us confused. The reason I bring these two good OP MCs up is to help convey how poorly written Touya and by extension this show is.

Touya faces no real challenges or flaws in his character. He's killed at 15 due to a mistake from God. Now you'd think this would cause some conflict or some trials. But nope! He takes it perfectly in stride and God decides to buff him as his way of saying sorry. He has superhuman speed and durability and can use every magic element in his new world. He heals the blind and poisoned, saves the king, helps random children who are lost, and is successful at every single thing he does. That is the main issue with this show. Touya is a pure Gary Sue in every sense of the word. There's no personal conflict with him. No trials or tribulations or failure. Touya therefore comes across as an incredibly boring character who feels completely unrelatable.

The rest of the show is very paint by numbers. The art is fine. The sound is fine. Really the rest of it is just fine. If you can look past the complete failure of character writing this show has then it's a perfect little time killer. But if you want a good OP MC show check out ONE's shows. They're funny, action packed, and most importantly well written.
