Orange (Anime) add (All reviews)
Sep 29, 2016
Dear TrashDax of the past,
be less of a dumbass.
Yours,
TrashDax of the future.

Story:
As I probably stated elsewhere, I'm a sucker for time travel stories. Nobody actually travels through time here, but the concept s very similar. Naho is a very reluctant girl, who does not have the "balls" to be as active as she needs to be to save Kakeru. Also, it's not certain at all if changing things will really save him or not. Put a developing romance on top of this and you have an interesting story with lots of possibilities. Too bad some of the developments are rather dumb and hurt the overall concept, like the revelation of how the letter got into the past or how the relationship is handled.

Art:
I understand that making an anime is an expensive venture, but if you're making an anime like Orange, that has really beautiful visuals and character designs, it hurts a lot if you put in some "cheap" episodes. I know, every anime does that, but that is still not an excuse. There is one episode especially (I think it was 9, but I could be mistaken) where every character looks horrible and it hurts the experience of watching. However, when they actually use their budget, Orange looks pretty awesome.

Sound:
The seiyuus are doing a very good job. It should be understood that Hanazawa once again does a perfect soft-spoken cutie, but all the others are absolutely on par. Both opening and ending are pretty nice, relaxing pop songs that fit the anime well. I have no memory of the background music, which in doubt is more positive than negative.

Characters:
Naho and Kakeru...just Naho and Kakeru. These two have made me really mad. Naho is a very oblivious, ditzy girl that occasionally borders on being mentally retarded. The fact she is too anxious to actively handle the situation is excuseable, yet still a little annoying. Kakeru uses his depression as an excuse to treat others (especially Naho) like shit. I have no idea why the others like him, he has no redeemable qualities at all. The actual star of Orange is Suwa, who is the only one who tries his best to make both main characters happy and acts reasonable. The other three try their best as well, so no hard feelings towards them.
5/10

Enjoyment:
If you are looking for "the feels", Orange might be your cup of tea. If you can ignore some of the stupid aspects of the main relationship, you will most likely enjoy it a lot. There are enough developments to keep you interested and a thrilling final episode (which is twice as long). I liked Orange, but it also annoyed me many times with the dumb decisions of Naho and Kakeru. In the end it was still worth it however.
