Mixed Feelings
Chuunibyou is a social problem in Japan, and has been portrayed before those show came out by others authors like Satoshi Kon in Paranoia Agent. But only Kyoto Animation coud take something and turn it in a Moeblob OMG kawaii desuuuuu Party. Let's face it, a KyoAni show where the characters didn't look cute would be like a shoujo without bishonen. Something really weird, just because we get used to.

The story is the classic formula Boy has Secret-Girl discovers It. We've already seen it in Onani Master Kurosawa and Aku no Hana. But, what embarassing secret the male character has? He had chuunibiyou in middle school, and now he want to start again. The main problem with the plot and this character is despite is supposed to be the most embarassing and social humillating thing ever, we never seen any real bad consequences. He suffered bullying? Embarassed his family? His teachers told him to stop in a rude way because they were annoyed? The only real consequence is shown to us is self-isolation. A bad thing, of course, but don't think it woulde be enough to the reactions he shows when someone nearly discover it.
One thing really surprise is how much the story reminds me to a Key's visual novel. Guy meets cute girl, and then the main character is surronded by girls, and we discover a melodramatic back-story. And there's childish humor, based in how clumsy the characters are. And there's a boy who is the male protagonist best friend, to show us the main character not just spend all his time with girls, that can't stop thinking about girls, and everybody beats him up for comedy's sake. I forgot something? The funniest thing is not based in a Key's visual novel. It's based in a light novel published by the editorial the studio owns, a common practice in KyoAni those days. That way, they had absolute control of what they want, how shows should be.
It's not the only thing it looks this show rips-off. It looks like they're doing this because they can't do Arakawa under the bridge, the story about a japanese guy with a girlfriend she believes she came from Venus. The main characters reactiobns are so similar, that i think KyoAni wanted the same seiyuu to play the role, but they didn't manage to.

The trouble with this show is pretty simple. It could be a great social commentary and a beautiful coming of age story about growing up, but all the potential was buried because the show was made for the people who made it. Fortunetly for the show, people loves KyoAni formula: school club, moeblob female characters with standard personalities, episodes centered around school festivals and beach episodes. Everything is adorable, happy, upbeat, colorful, nothing risky, nothing that'll make the public uncomfortable. That's not a bad thing, people deserve show that will make you happy, but, like when you eat too much sweets and candy, is not healthy.
