The World God Only Knows is a comedy about a high school boy named Keima who is forced to help a demon girl named Elsie catch loose souls that have escaped from Hell. However, loose souls possess the hearts of girls and the only way to exorcise a loose soul is to make the girl fall in love; it’s a good thing Keimas the master of dating simulations then.

6/10 Story: The anime is divided into a series of mini-arcs, about 2 to 3 episodes long, with each one involving Keima having to conquer the heart of a different girl. Every arc is pretty much the same, however, where at first the token girl hates Keima but is slowly seduced by him until she is finally in love with him at which point Elsie can come in and capture the loose soul. It is predictable, but remember this is a comedy so the story isn’t really as important as the humor and this anime really is hilarious; I always laughed when one of these girls beat Keima up. Furthermore, the anime does develop an over-arching plot later on, but sadly it’s REALLY under developed and not focused on enough which really disappointed me.

8/10 Characters: I really like all the characters in this anime, but the biggest problem I have with them is that they’re too one-dimensional. For example, Elsie is a really cute and funny character, but the problem is that’s all she is, she’s cute and funny with no other personality traits. The same can be said for Keima; Keima is a hardcore gamer who hates reality and that’s basically all he is. Overall, I like both Keima and Elsie, but neither of them really experience any kind of development.

However, although she doesn’t appear until season 2, Haqua is my favorite character and she has the most complex personality of all the characters. I love how she is the only girl not seduced by Keima’s charm and when you get to the climax she really steps up to the plate and shows just how strong she is.

One thing I wish was different though would be if there was more focus on some of the girls in Keima’s harem. After Keima conquers them, the girls are basically written out of the show which is sad because I wanted to know more about these girls. For example, in one episode it’s mentioned that Tenri wants to be a magician, but this is never brought up again; I would have loved to know more about that and see more of Tenri.

7/10 Overall: This was a really funny anime with good characters and an interesting premise, but the story was a little too unfocused and there was almost no character development from the main characters, Elsie and Keima. This anime is definitely worth watching because it did get a lot of laughs out of me; however, it could’ve much better and there were some characters I wish I could’ve seen more of.
