Breakdown:
High school student Makoto likes a girl who attends his school. As fortune has it, Makoto’s friend has recently become friends with her and offered to hook them up, but after Makoto kisses her on the train their relationship becomes more personal and ends up hurting people in the process.
My opinion on School Days:
School days was one of the very first anime’s I watched very early on, the anime is fairly normal to begin with just filled with typical high school stuff, a guy falls in love with the “hot” girl with big boobs, friend sets them up and then people get hurt due to others having feelings for him too, totally normal right? well, sadly I’m quite wrong when I say “normal”. Skipping ahead to episode 4, we find Makoto and Sekai (the friend who set them up) having “practice” sex on the roof of the school, not so normal now! haha. Already the anime has taken a huge step rather quickly, with the start of the anime being rather normal but by episode 4 we see this scene.
Let’s talk about Makoto, the main character, honestly Makoto is one of the biggest pricks I have ever seen in any anime. He is shallow, selfish, uncaring and shows no emotion towards the girls he has sex with, I really wouldn’t call him a protagonist, more of a sex craving, idiotic jackass. Any girl he meets is nothing more than just sex to him which later in the show gets him into quite a bit of trouble, all in Makoto is one of the most selfish, spineless, despicable men I have ever seen in anime with the way he treats women.
In the show even after being in a relationship with Katonoha, Makoto continues to sleep with Sekai, who most of the time forces herself upon him despite knowing he is in a relationship with Katonoha so she isn’t a much better person either. Eventually when Makoto goes back to Katonoha, Sekai obviously being jealous of this then pretends to be pregnant with his child, how lovely!
School daysKatonoha has had a non-existent social life and due to this is very shy and usually gets pushed out by both females and males, she is mild-mannered and polite but with what happens in the story line her personality changes to something very different. She is incredibly dependent and devoted to Makoto in the end this leads to her killing Sekai when she finds out Sekai killed Makoto and discovered his body in his apartment when she kills Sekai this is also how it is discovered she was lying about being pregnant with Makoto’s child.
School days certainly has twisted, evil scenes in it which a lot of fans defend by saying it is more like a real high school than any other anime, but no this is in no way true, for example- there is a scene that during the high school festival there is a room where couples can go to have sex and while they are having sex is is being recorded and then watched by other people and as previously mentioned, the killings. In what real high school does this happen? did my school do something wrong? did everyone else’s “normal” high school do something wrong? what happens in this anime is pretty far from normal.
To be honest, though when I first watched School Days I rather enjoyed it but looking back on it as an adult and after watching much more anime, it is not as good as it seemed. It was more creepy and just lacked anything more than sex, cheating, heartbreak and oh… MORE SEX. If I had to I probably wouldn’t watch it again there are many more animes out there that are so much better.
In total, I would give school days a rating of 4/10
The concept of it being an anime about typical teenagers and typical High School seemed good and the twisted ending I will be honest I did like the idea of a dark ending, but it didn’t live up to expectations.
