(This is my review on Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) from my website)
This review is on the anime and NOT the manga, the series was the anime’s own adaptation and did not feature in the manga. I will also be doing a review on Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler): Book of Circus at a later date. *CONTAINS SPOILERS* Date released: Japan – October 2008 (America/England – January 2011) ... Breakdown: Black butler is a show about a young boy called Ciel, who sells his soul to a demon named Sebastian so that he can exact his revenge for his family’s death, also successfully lead their confectionary and toy company called Funtom. The demon that Ciel makes the contract with takes the form of his butler and is in the image of his father, he is very loyal to Ciel and is required to protect, serve and arrive whenever he is summoned by his master Ciel. My opinion on Black Butler: Let me start by saying, Black Butler is one of my all-time favourite animes! I really think it is such a well-written series. The theme of the anime is that a young boy called Ciel makes a deal with a demon called Sebastian. After Ciel’s parents died he was taken to be sold as a child slave and one day in captivity as he was being tortured, he cried out of desperation that he had given up on god and this is when he met Sebastian whom he now has a deal with to avenge his parents death. Driven by sheer anger, revenge, hatred and hurt Ciel agreed to make a contract with Sebastian but the stipulation of this contract is that Sebastian gets to devour Ciel’s soul once it has been fulfilled. The theme of revenge and redemption are well put together and the story lines are very well crafted though it isn’t filled with non-stop action. Black Butler certainly has it’s share of dark and supernatural battle scenes as well as witty, funny battle scenes, there is also quite a bit of dark humour out through the series, but it is really balanced out by its traditional anime comedy along with this it also has mystery, drama and romance which is carried out very well. Every character is complex and the variety in personality is something I really enjoy, getting to know each character is a nice experience of watching this anime. One big thing I loved about this anime is that there are certain points that make you want to laugh, cry and get angry at Sebastian and Ciel for the things they do but one part of the anime that always stays the same are the characters. The characters Finny, Mey-Rin, Bard and Lizzy which are Ciel’s servants, always keep the comedic side to it and they have their own stories to tell. Throughout the story we see many parts of Ciel, his many roles include, being Queen Victoria’s watchdog, running Britains underworld, avenging his parents death and with his “One hell of a butler” at hand, they both battle everything from drug runners and serial killers to demon hounds, angels, ghosts and other demons. The only thing I can point out that is somewhat off-putting is the fake British accents, but I understand that not everyone can put on a good accent and after the first few episodes or so I found it funnier rather than an annoyance. Scene from Episode 16 Scene from Episode 16 In the end, it doesn’t quite turn out as expected and I did like the ending, I have seen a lot of fans complain about how it ended but me personally I didn’t think it was so bad, I rather enjoyed that Ciel didn’t die and Sebastian ended up being his butler for the rest of eternity because he made a promise to Ciel that he would be his butler until the end. I won’t say how but Ciel ended up sharing his body with someone else who made a deal and the deal was that Ciel will turn into a demon when he gets his own body back. Sebastian tried to kill Ciel so that he could have his soul but by the time he tries to do this, he is too late and Ciel is already a demon so now, for the rest of eternity Sebastian is Ciel’s butler. It truly ends by Ciel and Sebastian leaving the house to the servants, they head to a field and it is then explained what happened and why Ciel is still alive and why Sebastian is still with him. Rating – 8 / 10 Conclusion Overall I personally found Black butler to be a fantastic anime, I really enjoyed it and it will always be up there with my favourites. The balance between dark and supernatural with traditional anime comedy really caught my attention and the storylines had me hooked! I would recommend this anime 100%. I know that Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler): Book of Circus is a the new season of the anime, going back to the storyline that is in the manga so it is not considered a continuation of the previous seasons as it goes back to Noah’s arc Circus, but I would personally like to see another season which is a continuation of demon Ciel continuing with seeking revenge and possibly achieving this goal he has set out for himself as it would be interesting to see how Ciel’s personality has changed, what strengths he has now and just how differently he would carry out his tasks. I guess that they want to stick to the manga storyline now so I do have high hopes for anything else they decide to release after Book of Circus! I’m excited to see what they have in store for Black Butler. * I DID NOT watch the extra’s that have been released for Black Butler I just watched the main series so I’m unsure if they have done some spin off episodes where they have continued with demon Ciel’s story, as I prefer to wait until a series is completely finished before I watch the extras. I will definitely check them out and if there is a continuation, I will edit this post and put my thoughts on it * If your opinion of this differs from mine, or you would just like to add anything then please feel free to let me know.
