Mixed Feelings
Another long english title. Here we have a show that seems to have a ton of production value go into it, and what came out of it was an uneven balance scale. On one hand, you got amazing action scenes with a hit or miss soundtrack for viewers, on the other you got a very underdevloped world with under developed characters. What happens when you combine these two? The irregular at magic high school.

I'll start with the story which seems to be really unfocused and seems to be an ass pull as means to develop the world we experience in the show. Well it sure as hell did not do that. The show starts with our prodigy main protagonist Tatsuya go to school. I wonder who the title can be referring to. The story is pretty vague until the end, this prodigy protagonist has a sister he very much adores and the feeling is mutual. Tatsuya is amazing but is ranked as low as a noob; so the story starts out with all the characters finding out just how amazing he is and the potential he holds. Then we get to see him pull shit out of his ass and everything just happens to be better/resolved whenever he does it.

Now the beef that I have with this story is that we get an understanding of how magic became part of the world, but the story does not dive deeper into what it could be. Things like discrimination are briefly mentioned, but that is just within the school. What about the rest of world? Is there a reason some people can't use magic and what are the terrorist groups true motives? Unfortunately these realistic themes were not tackled; I believe part of this was due to this show being a high school setting. Overall, story is wasted potential and is very predictable with a bunch of asspulls and plot conveniences.

Okay so the characters can be summed up with 2 words, one dimensional. It's not a big deal for me if the main protagonist was a genius and that their overpowered abilities were justified, but having a bunch of characters being on the same boat? It just makes every action scene feel underwhelming, predictable, pretentious, tedious, etc. There is really nothing much to say about the characters because they were so underdeveloped and there was a boatload of characters introduced to us. The show is set up where viewers just need to watch the eye candied action scenes. As for other aspects of the characters, you know the show's romance is bad when the side characters have a more genuine romantic relationship compared to the main protagonist and heroine.
side note: it got pretty annoying when the plot influenced Tatsuya's actions and the characters were on his d!ck the whole time, especially Miyuki (onee sama)

Sound is hit or miss for viewers i think. There is a mix of dubstep, EDM and soft medleys through the OST. I found it to be pretty average, no standouts. I liked the first opening and both endings. Disliked the 2nd opening. Voice actors are a little bland but its deserved since bland characters and bland story.

Animation is pretty sick. Leave it to Madhouse to make some sick action scenes involving magic and matrix like movements. Character designs were standard, but the gore and spells were on point.

I came into this show knowing that Tatsuya was a very very strong protagonist and its not like that bugged me, but the lack of development for everything put me off. There were just too many plot conveniences that made him stand out and it was like a broken record by the end of the show. I felt like I've been left in the desert to dry up while Tatsuya goes does whatever and makes it better. The potential of the story is astounding, but it is limited to this high school setting. I mean it's just so convenient to have a high school freshman be so capable right? Assuming the intended audience is for teens, then this show certainly fulfills that gap.
Well for what we got, its pretty decent to watch for the animation. I can't recommend this though since it feels repetitive and gets boring quickly. It amazes me that top tier class production studios and voice actors were used for this.

i never want to hear the words "onee sama" ever again
