One word to describe this anime: Bland. It is popcorn fluff that tries its hardest and succeeds at being neither terribly creative nor terribly offensive. I have seen quite a few reviews on here lauding it as the greatest anime ever created and even a few calling it the worst ever. I agree with neither of these, the show is merely Studio Bones or whoever made it trying to fill in the space between airings of larger more developed projects.

The Story 2/10
If you have ever seen a fluff anime before you already know what the story is going to be, girl meets boy. Girl falls for boy, something gets in the way, boy basically admits to being in love with her, is empowered to stay the same to be with her and finally he beats the bad guy. The side stories never go on for long enough to be boring and distract from the main story, or interesting enough to make you want to see more about it. The characters (which we’ll get to later) have some ability to grow, but it is stifled by the short run of the show and the desire to keep the show as bland and fluffy as possible; the final scene of the show hints at more to come in a season that will never come.

The Animation 7/10
The animation is fine; I never found it distracting I know little to nothing about animation. From what I can surmise it was not poor enough to keep me from enjoying the show nor impressive enough to merit any special credit from me. If you liked the animation style from Code Geass, you’ll probably like this style also.

The Sound 7/10
The sounds are fine. The voice acting was pretty good, there wasn’t really much need to really test voice actors as just about nothing happened the whole anime, but they were overall pretty good. The intro and ending songs were pretty good on their own, but didn’t fit as well as I would have liked with this type of anime, however in keeping with the theme of basically this whole review it wasn’t overly offensive and didn’t really merit any special attention. Just listen to it and judge for yourself:

The Characters 8/10
The characters are flat. They don’t evolve at all throughout the course of the entire anime. When they do grow the slightest amount it feels forced, and the character you are left dealing with doesn’t even seem like the character you’ve been watching for the past ten episodes. Another problem this anime suffers from relating to this is the effective white-washing of all of its characters into this blob of good and evil characters. It almost seems like the writer thought up all of the characters in the beginning, set up whole arcs for them to explore and evolve and then at some point in the implementation of the show, someone from up top showed up and said that’s all cool and stuff but I need this this and this in the show, and you only have this long to do it in. This meant that that deep back-story the writer had planned where the character evolves over the course of ten episodes had to be cut down to 1 and now he had a goal to meet for his character.

All of this being said, however, I find it much more important that an audience be able to relate to and fall in love with the characters in the show, and this show does that impeccably. While they may not have been deep by the end, it was hard to not fall in love with the characters in the show, and there is something to be said about that.

The Enjoyment 9/10
Despite the show’s obvious downfalls, I definitely say the fluff is well worth watching at least once. It won’t change the way you think about anything or really stick out in any way when you try thinking back to it later, but mind-numbing popcorn blandness is good for you every once in a while.

Overall 7/10
Overall, this show is nothing special; enjoyable with fun to watch characters no doubt, but not worth the time if you’re looking for anything more than something to pass the time watching. I doubt I’ll ever want to rewatch it a later point in time or even that I’ll be able to remember the name of it, but I don’t regret sitting down to watch this enjoyable waste of time.
