Clannad (Anime) add (All reviews)
Jan 5, 2014
Summary: Clannad is enjoyable, but I don't think it was my thing. It didn't leave much of an impression on me.

Story: 6
The story wasn't particularly original. A guy who's no good at anything else builds up a harem, and they form the theatre club (the first girl's dream). My main objection, though, was that nearly every plot point was predictable. I could probably tell you most of the “spoilers” and it wouldn't affect your viewing pleasure whatsoever. In fact, by saying that everything's predictable, I've done that already. But as I said, that doesn't matter. There were some interesting bits: notably at the very end of the last episode in main sequence (excluding the special & OVA) (IIRC), which has quite a bearing on how things are interpreted.

Art: 9
It looked great quality, though Kyou, Ryou and Kotomi look annoyingly similar. You learn it after a few episodes of contrasting them, so that doesn't matter too much.

Sound: 9
The backing music was great; it really fitted with the scenes. However, I wasn't too keen on the OP and ED. They weren't bad, but I've watched the likes of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Shinsekai yori recently, and Clannad's tunes don't stand a chance against them.

The seiyuu were a mixed bunch. I really liked Youhei's, Nagisa's dad's and Fuko's voice actors, but some of the girls sounded too similar to each other. Overall, though, a positive.

Character: 6
Mostly stock slice-of-life characters. The Furukawa family were quite funny, as were the Sunohara siblings. Certainly, the group of characters is better than the sum of its parts. We should thank Tomoya enormously for forming the theatre club/harem.

Enjoyment: 9
Some parts were very funny, and some were very sad. I think this aspect of the show was done excellently for what it is. I generally didn't feel bored throughout any episode, despite the obvious plot. They managed to avoid fillers quite admirably, too.

Overall: 8
It's only been about a week since I finished it, but in that time I've dropped it down from a 9 to an 8. Why? It didn't give me anything to remember it by. I enjoyed watching, but the whole thing turned out to be a passive experience. The great shows leave an impression on me: it's nearly a year since I watched Steins;Gate, but I remember what was great about that (namely, the superlative use of past-oriented time travel). A bit more comparably (since it has the same setting), Onanii Master Kurosawa has its own message about growing up and changing. With this, okay, there's that bit right at the end which I mentioned above, but it was mostly unimpressive (in the more literal sense).
