Both tell a touching story of war from the eyes of a civilian.
Difference is that War in the Pocket is a mecha scifi, while Grave of the Fireflies is a realistic story situationed during WW2
Both are really gritty and depressing stories of war as experienced by young children.

Both are gritty and harrowing tales of war as experienced by children and civilians; focusing on the futility of wars and the destruction they cause. Both anime are quite tragic and have many emotional moments.
