Utena's chronicles and Usagi's saga have an overall similar mood and imagery: we have fighting beauties, fantasy/magic elements, romance, friends, uniforms, roses.
The female cast is wide and (mostly) strong, the shoujo-ai (sub)text is there, the bishounen can be either princey or a nightmare - sometimes both.

Both shows have a female protagonist who matures throughout the series. Though Utena matures quicker and less obivously than Usagi. Depending on whether you watch dub or sub there are sexual inneuendos in both series and implied lesbianism. They are both considered to be of the shojo genre. My friends and i both consider these animes to be classics. The stock footage and repetive results can become tedious at times but the many comedic elements will keep you entertained.

Both have lgbt elements in them as well as also a strong female cast and both having dark moments in it from time to time and also a strong focus on character development for the cast as well too and a very pleasing to look at art, visual style and character designs and animation that still holds up very well to this day.

Both are very archetypical shoujo anime, meaning:
- both are very episodic and have a superficial monster-of-the-week-plot
- Both are full of tropy characters and "hot boys" who look almost as female as female characters.
- Both are very exclusively targeted at girls and contain awkward feminist undertones.
