Ignoring the obvious criminal underworld and assassin lead links between the two, there's a parallel of sorts between Brandon & Harry and Reiji & Claudia's relationships. Where as both Brandon and Reiji do the dirty work required to push their 'bosses' further up the ladder, Harry and Claudia fight their battles in the criminal political arena; trying to get ahead of their rivals. There are VERY few anime in existence that deal with assassins killing too many people to count and their involvement with criminal organizations. So, though the directions the two go in differ, if you liked one then it's definitely worth checking out the   read more

Gungrave and Phantom are both tragic and character-driven dramas. They are both set in America, with the main characters of each series becoming assassins and being sucked into a powerful crime organization and a world of violence . Both of these anime use a very realistic and gritty color palette and set a serious and oppressive tone right from the very beginning, with little room for humor. Gungrave and Phantom are also similar in that they are both very stylized and are significantly influenced by Western sources, such as film noir and crime dramas.

The routes that the main protagonists follows are what they decide by themselves. Both series features action, drama, and contains a thriller like feeling.

Both involve huge crime/mafia syndicates that control most of the underworld. Both have underhanded characters trying to climb up the latter and accumulate power in their respective syndicates and will betray allies if necessary. The main character of both these shows are hit-man/ assassin. Both shows have type a dramatic feel to it and the animes deploy a similar art style. Betrayal is also a big theme of both shows. On a negative note both these shows have a annoying, young girl that stick around for about 6 episodes or so. But don't worry they both play a minor part in the overall stories of the   read more

These have a very similar atmosphere, both deal with crime and being an assassin and emphasize the effect death has on others. Not thoughtless shoot em' up action series, they are both very dark and focus a lot of the series on character development and the consequences of certain actions. Both are very consistent, there is a reason for everything that happens and when something bad happens it's irreversible, you won't see any spontaneous lucky breaks like are all too common in anime nowadays.
