These shows are both thought-provoking sports anime heavily invested in the themes of natural talent and practice
I think the main reason why they are so similar, is that both animes ask the same questions: What is sports and why am i doing sports?
Two amazing coming of age stories. Possibly the two best I've seen within the medium of anime. These are both seinen sports anime which include highly emotional moments and even similar climaxes. Both are very rewarding for similar reasons. Excellent character growth and plot progression. Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru is my favorite anime of all time and Ping- Pong is the only anime that I have found similar to it as of the time of this recommendation.
Both are about finding meaning in your passion. Both share great elements of realistic character portrayals, albeit Ping Pong is a lot more grim and unforgiving. Both demonstrates the value of the passion and how it shapes a persons morals, values, worldview and relations. All the while being understanding of ones own limits and misgivings in pursuing an art/passion. Essentially, a sport anime that isnt about sports.
