Your Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria Review

To all who are not sure of reading it, give it a shot. You might enjoy it. The character Aya Otonashi might just be the best thing in this first volume followed by Usui. I didn't really feel much for the main character. He just seemed bland and boring in his choice of dialogue. I also wasn't really sure which side he was on most of the time.

If you're curious as to why this series is rated so highly, most of the people who have rated it have read more than the first volume. It just gets better and better as it goes along, though I wasn't that big a fan of volume 2. Volume 7 is one of my favourite novels ever, and the novels leading up to it are also really great. I didn't care all that much for Aya Otonashi, but the protagonist, on the other hand, managed to become one of my favourite characters of all time. We have very distinct opinions about Kazuki because we've read different amounts of HakoMari. HakoMari's writing is designed to lead you into false assumptions throughout the entire series, and Kazuki is no different. He's designed to appear like the average, everyday protagonist, but he isn't. He really, really isn't. I believe that he has the strongest sense of identity of the entire cast, but they're all great by the end.

Bottom line: Finish the series and I guarantee you'll appreciate it a whole lot more. Or, if you don't, I'd love to hear why. It's not all fantastic, but most of it is.

A Recommendation

If you have in fact finished HakoMari and didn't think all that much of it, I recommend the Kamisu Reina Series by the same author. I liked it more than HakoMari, and it's shorter, too. It's only 2 volumes long, fully translated on Baka-Tsuki. If you thought that the characters in HakoMari were bland and underdeveloped, I implore you to look at Kamisu Reina.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
