This movie felt like Nagi no Asukara, Steins;Gate, Cinderella, and Spirited Away had a baby...and that didn't really go well. It was such an amalgamation of things that it was a bit overwhelming because it seemed like the plot was going to go a million different places and then went nowhere. I was really disappointed because the DAOKO song『打上花火』that goes with it is so good and touching.
SPOILER UNDERNEATH OF SORTS BUT I'M JUST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY THE MOVIE IS WHAT IT IS, I PROMISE THERE IS NOTHING THAT IS NOT IN THE SYNOPSIS.
I really wanna rant on this movie, but I think a
...
lot of people already have so let me provide a unique perspective on what Shaft might have been thinking. This will be a sort of justification of what they were doing. I think that this whole thing would have been a lot better if it was exclusively from Nazuna's POV. This is a story of a girl who wants to run away from her home because she views her parents as abusive, altho it is really hard for the viewer to see them like that considering what they are doing for her. From the viewer's point of view, she seems like some little girl who wants to elope with Norimichi and has no idea of what she's even doing. I think that it was meant to be that way because imagine the backlash they would have gotten if they actually justified eloping and running away. Shaft has done a lot of great slice of life but nothing with this powerful of a purpose or at least if they have it's been covered with a bit of magic and it's quite clear. This is more real, more actual life, and thus it has to be more punishing in what happens at points and seems silly at others so that the audience knows, "this is just a movie and a dream like cinderella and it won't actually happen."
There are many children (I am not one) who are from abusive households who probably resonate with what happened in this film. I can kind of see it after listening to people talk about abusive parenting and divorces. Obviously I will never understand it, but I am sympathetic enough to what they are saying and what this movie is trying to do with it. You can justify the lack of character development in that it is almost like the movie is suppose to be how the other characters are to her...down to there stereotypes of what type of high school boy Norimichi's friends are to the teacher. There is not much depth and this is a movie so it's kind of hard, but I think that was almost intentional...because if they were anymore developed it would make what happened even weirder.
Now the worlds that they go through, and the fireworks part, and the time-turner thingy...I can't really justify that it's all weird and reminiscent of other time-travel anime. It's a neat idea that is almost never executed well and certainly isn't here. I wish some blockbuster anime film wouldn't do time travel tbh, but in order to get from scene to scene in a movie without being an episode recap that is the easiest way...not the best...but definitely the easiest.
What I took away from watching this film and thinking about it was...that was crazy and the theater I went to had that reaction "What just happened? Is that it?" I was left wondering the same thing. But kids who go through abuse often are left wondering that too. I don't think it was perfect execution or even good, but the concept was attempted and I applaud them for trying...it was less triggering than Koe no Katachi that's all I'll say.

I'm going to split this review into 2 parts because I don't really have hate for this movie in the typical sense. I teared up a bit but not for the right reasons and I am just as guilty as anyone for viewing this anime from an inconsiderate emotional point of view. I understand if you want to down vote my review, but as pretty and well-done the soundtrack I don't live in the mainstream bubble that seems to laud this movie as the second coming of Kimi no Na Wa. Okay now that I'm done with that disclaimer here are the two main parts
...
that I saw in this anime and ultimately my conclusion.
The Art and the Sound: They are amazing. I really have no problem with that. I think that the soundtrack is really well done, especially the OP "My Generation" which matched the scene perfectly and set the tone for how an arrogant little young 6th grade brat would think. The art has this nice muted ton that pretty much all slice of life have and in terms of scenes, they never went overboard with that art. However on the same note, it did make it feel kind of stale.
The Character, Story, and Enjoyment: Oh boy, this is where I think most people get this anime wrong. Talking to friends, this seems to be entirely a movie thing as the Manga develops the characters a bit better apparently, but I'm review the movie and this is my opinion of them. Ueno is completely wasted, like idk how she almost changed her mind in one night compared to not changing it over the time between 6th grade and the present day in the movie and in the end it seems like she never comprehended Nishimiya. Not to make this too long, but they also underutilized: Miyako, Kawai (she seem like such a cry baby), Mashiba, Yaeko (at least have her develop some emotion outside of resting bitch face), and Shimada (that cameo at the amusement park was such a waste of time if you're not going to do anything with him). It seemed like they were focused on developing Ishida, and there is not really a problem with focusing on the protagonist, but they turned Nishimiya into such an antagonist it is almost insensitive. Even though Ishida changes his mind on Nishimiya and even loves her, the underlying stereotype that deaf people are egocentric remained and didn't really go away, even as she made friends, and that is really sad. I'm not deaf, so I'm not going to say I know any better, but stereotyping them that way is just plain disgraceful of the producers and writers. I sorta enjoyed it because I got to watch it with my friend and talk it through, but really outside of that it was a really questionable movie that had the potential to be so much more and just went splat.

Okay to start, I realize that some people think that the RPG genre is pretty worn out by now, and I did too, until I saw this. This pulls themes of grief and struggle along with growth and perseverance to build a spectacular work of art.
While I think the premise of how they got into the world is just put in as a sort of excuse to explore this world, sorta like Log Horizon, it is such a moving anime that I didn't really mind. The first episode when all that was laid out was kinda boring, but the rest was utterly stellar. There is
...
so much emotion and power put behind each of the characters and how they are developed. It is really hard to describe what makes certain animes good, but this brings a harmony between the art, a great OP and ED that fit the story really well, and the characters that just makes it hard not to love. It pulls from characters and ideas that are universal across similar animes but puts a really unique and fresh twist on it.
It is by no means a stereotypical RPG and as you watch it you'll see that it sheds a different sorta light on that idea. If you like RPGs and deep slice of life and want flow in your viewing experience, I highly recommend Hai to Gensou no Grimgar!!!

Little Witch Academia was an amazing intersection between magic and anime. I almost never write reviews, but this certainly warranted one. This reminded me of the reason that I love Harry Potter so much: through the characters and the world that is created it has the power to capture the imagination in a pretty surreal way. The characters were really well-developed, the music is great (especially OP2 - MIND CONDUCTOR by YURiKA) and the story itself was always funny and suspenseful. The art itself might seem a bit childish at first but trust me its perfect for what it is trying to convey. There are
...
multiple characters in this anime that grow up and realize how naive they were which hits home with me and many others.
I can't remember the last time I was grinning while watching an entire anime. It just has the ability to make you feel all nice and fuzzy inside. If you like magic this is a no brainier. If this is your first anime I think it is a great representation of what anime should be: heartfelt art. Highly recommended!!!

I remember seeing the original Psycho Pass when it first came out, and the second one as well. Psycho Pass has always found a niche that I feel most animes can't do justice. It brings crime and awareness on levels I've only seen out of maybe Zankyou no Terror, and that's about it.
Onto the review, story took a turn for the better imo in the middle, and without any spoilers, made for an interesting finish to the plot. But that has always been a high to Psycho-Pass, and this movie did a great job of it in less than ~5 episodes. Art was great, some
...
really awesome fight scenes towards the end, and graphics are always spectacular. Character was the same, and the throwbacks and coverage of some characters who we were left hanging with after Psycho-Pass 2 (namely Kougami) got an emotional side to them.
So great graphics, good story, and the same strong characters all made for a great anime movie. Yes, it is a tribute movie to the original series, but that's why it is great. Highly recommend if you like behavioral theory, crime investigations, mystery, or great stories in general.

Oh the feels are real... I'm just in awe after watching Shigatsu. I feel so at peace, so moved by it all, there are no words that can be said about how everything clicked with me without giving out spoilers, which I won't. Everything from the art, which has a flowy, romantic style (perfect for Chopin) that makes everything seem more lively. Each character is distinctly amazing in his/her own right; what makes good, well-rounded animes are characters that move the plot and Shigatsu certainly has its share of them. It took a little bit longer than I thought to get to the end, but
...
it was all worth it. I remember marathoning the first 15 episodes in one day, and just being utterly speechless and crying, and this comes from a guy who is indifferent about almost everything. Well worth the time I put into it, and definitely unique in its own right. Enjoy it while you watch, because there may never be a slice of life quite like Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso again.
