I joined MAL because I wanted to know what series I had seen, then slowly I started searching for things that I planned to watch and manga I wanted to read, waiting for news, weekly manga, light novel and DVD sales and slowly it became an everyday thing.


I haven't seen Nichijou, but I've planning to for a long time (I've seen the scene with the director and the deer xD) but I haven't come around to it cause I'm always distracted by something, just look at my PTW list and you'll understand, it has almost 600 anime.


I was into ecchi stuff at first xD that's why I have a lot of ecchi on my list but not anymore, now I love comedy and fantasy settings, like Baka to Test and Overlord perspectively. Although it's unfortunate that there aren't many GOOD seinen anime that don't hold back on the blood, that's why I read manga.


Would you believe me if I told you that I've been going with this name -or different versions of it (josephg7)ever since grade school where I first started playing games and etc?? xDD it's stuck for good haha

It'll give you a great selection-
The only problem with it is that I end up using reaction images from shows I don't even like or haven't seen
Like K-On! has the best reaction gifs
Because it's just a girls doing cute things show
But because it's that kind of anime I'm also probably never going to watch it
I used to feel guilty like I was misleading people but I personally no longer feel that it's that big of a deal

Plus you can always refine your search to get a gif from a particular show

So the way you link to things is by using [url=link]randomtext[/url]
The text doesn't actually have to coincide with what you're linking to

And remove the spaces you get Cheese doodles

That's where MAL kinda unnecessarily sucks and you enter a dangerous game lol- are you ready??
MAL comments don't have a preview function but messages do. I usually type my comment as if I were writing a message and then when I'm done copy and paste it into the comments section.
You have to be careful, though, because the preview button is chillin' right in between the send message button and cancel, both of which could be pretty catastrophic
So I suggest you draft the comment in [the person you're sending the comment to]'s message box
And pray you don't click cancel lol

I know the struggle.
You see people nonchalantly have like 1000+ shows completed in their watch list
And you're just like
WHAT. I WANT TO BE YOU. HOW MUCH LONGER UNTIL I CAN BE YOU?!!
But in the end it really isn't a competition and sometimes to be fair to the show itself you have to wait until it's the right time
For example, mecha and magical school girl are probably my least favorite genres
Because I was in such a rush to be a "cultured" anime fan I rushed watching Madoka Magicka when I wasn't in the mood to watch that kind of anime and ended up dropping it
I barely remember what happened in the episodes I did watch and I'm planning to give it another shot- but only when I'm ready and actually excited to be watching it
Since I had that experience I'm going to carry over the same attitude to Evangelion
A lot of the popular consensus masterpieces are pretty serious/heavy and it's good to take breaks in between anyway
And even if you do wait and it still isn't your thing, not liking something that's popular is perfectly normal
I watched Gankutsuou and even though I found the visuals absolutely freaking breathtaking the story just didn't hook me in like it hooked in other people
Having that experience of not always connecting to a popular thing just made it more special when I ended up loving stuff like Cowboy Bebop and One Punch Man

Yo! Not a problem, I know how it is when you have no one to talk here.
I guess you could say that, some of the entries are one of those anime that I watched when I started so they made a huge impression on me, I also like comedy a lot and seinen (but you can rarely find any good seinen anime and that's why it's better to just read manga). I'm 20 btw and the name's Joe, yoroshiku loli imouto-san!

Well, I definitely didn't have a bad time- that's for damn sure
Even if it is just for the bishies I can't muster the ability to feel too guilty about it
Like, hear me out, when Free! first came out there were a lot of guys bitching and moaning about how it was gay
And how they could never watch a show like that
And how it was "ruining anime" (#1 bs excuse people give when they dislike something)
Meanwhile, every other freaking show in the season is a female harem or at least has female fanservice and tons of jiggly boobs and stuff
I get it, we live in a capitalist society and male viewers kinda dominate the anime industry
But that doesn't make Free! less legitimate as an anime than the harems everyone thinks are masterpieces
/rant

My advice would be to not rush it.
When I started on MAL I was really hyper aware that I hadn't seen any of the supposedly great shows
So I tried to watch too much at once and I honestly regret that now
Because there are lots of shows on my list that I don't even really remember how they ended because I watched them too quickly
I mean, I still haven't seen very many shows but I've learned to take it easy and try to enjoy the stuff that I do watch
One of my favorite anime experiences that I think I've had since starting MAL has been watching Zetsuen no Tempest
It was the first show where nobody else told me to watch it- I found it all on my own and absolutely loved it
So yeh, don't be like me and think okay I have to watch Baccano and then Steins Gate and then Gurren Lagann
Give Baccano maybe one more episode and if you still aren't 100% sold you can always drop it and pick it back up later


What are your favorite genres?
I've barely watched more anime than you have but maybe I can give you a recommendation

Everyone freaks out about it like it's hot shit while its airing and then it's like you never ever hear about it again
Like it never even existed
My advice, if you care about being current watch the best of the new stuff
If you don't you don't have to stress about it

It's definitely confusing in the beginning but it'll all start making sense soon!
