ES & Mars are by the same author. If you’ve read one of these two stories and enjoyed it for the darker psychological elements explored, you’ll definitely like the other. They don’t handle the same topics but the writing delivery is pretty similar. Eternal Sabbath leans more sci-fi and Mars leans more romance. But they’re both definitely a “darker side of the human mind” type of story.

Boukoku no Marguerite
add

Both Yona of the Dawn and Boukoku no Marguerite are stories about deposed princesses. Yona is old enough that when her father loses the throne, she journeys with her trusted knight and finds the legendary dragons. Boukoku no Marguerite is not a mythical story. Marguerite is a child when her country is taken over and while running away with her nanny she is rescued by a retired knight who raises her as his son until she’s too old to conceal anymore. You watch her as she goes back to being a woman and learns what happened to her country.

Ashi-Girl
add

“Ashi-Girl” is basically the Sengoku period isekai version of “Kaze Hikaru” (Bakumatsu period) - except wackier and the male lead isn’t as dense. “Kaze Hikaru” is much more of a slow burn and more realistic, citing lots of historical events. “Ashi-Girl” has a plot where the heroine wants to alter history and “Kaze Hikaru” flows with existing historical events. Both are great comedic shoujo historicals.

Adonis
add

“Adonis” and “Return of the Female Knight” are great reads that feature female knights. “Adonis” has a lot more magic than “Return of the Female Knight”. In both cases, I recommend the novel over the manhwa as both are phenomenal stories. “Adonis” is a true epic in length.

The Return of Elena the Knight

If you enjoy “From A Knight to a Lady”, you might enjoy “The Return of the Female Knight” (novel >>> manhwa). There’s a lot more action in the latter than the former but both stories center around women who are/were knights.

How to Win My Husband Over

Saving My Sweetheart
add

Both of these stories feature misunderstood female leads in fantasy settings. Both female protagonists suffer from self confidence issues and specifically “How To Win My Husband Over” delves into mental health issues as well. For that reason, I would say “Saving My Sweetheart” is a “lighter” read than HTWMHO but both have similar vibes.

“Secret Lady” and “The Villainess Is A Marionette” are both absolutely stunning manhwa. If you like the art style of one, you will definitely appreciate the other. The stories are also great political romances!

If you like “The Fantasie of a Stepmother”, definitely check out “Secret Lady”. Both are fantasy romances that have an edge of mystery to them and are very beautiful, atmospheric reads. I highly recommend both!

Revolutionary Princess Eve
add

If you want something edgy instead of sweet, grab one of these manhwas! Both of these stories are fantasy romance manhwa with darker themes. I would say “Roxana” is perhaps one of the darkest villainess stories (at least the novel is) and “Revolutionary Princess Eve” is probably one of the darker themed fantasy time travel manhwas that isn’t a villainess story. Both are very good and use a lot of magic.

Saving My Sweetheart

Both stories are romances that center around female protagonists who turn back time using magic. “The Villainess Turns the Hourglass” is more political and “Saving My Sweetheart” is more fantasy adventure. But both give me similar vibes without being similar stories. I highly recommend both!

add

“Ending Maker” is kind of like a romcom version of “Omniscient Reader”. The tones are wildly different but the whole fantasy adventure with the MC knowing the future is similar. Both also incorporate video game-like mechanics (skills, leveling up, etc). They’re both great reads and highly recommended!

I Shall Master This Family
add

Both of these stories feature strong female protagonists who strive to overcome a male dominated political society. "The Remarried Empress" is a story about Navier's divorce and remarriage as an empress who started out with a terrible husband and "I Shall Master This Family" is a story about Tia's rise to dominance within her patriarchal family / society. Both are very political and I think "I Shall Master This Family" actually handles the politics a bit better than "The Remarried Empress". However, both are EXCELLENT and two of my top tier Ropan (Romance Fantasy) manhwas. (Also the novels are excellent as well.)

I'm very surprised to not see recommendations for "Boys Over Flowers" & "Hana Kimi". Both were very popular high school romance manga classics during the 2000's that were made into multiple dramas across many countries. If you like one, you're sure to like the other!

Myne is a passionate bookworm and Mao Mao is crazy about medicines and poisons. Myne causes a lot more mayhem with her love of books and Mao Mao is more grounded and does her best to "do no harm" with her knowledge (but she's still a pretty crazy mad scientist type). Both are great for a laugh and I highly recommend them. Both female leads are very clever and fun to watch in action. If you love one, you'll love the other.

Both "Kaze Hikaru" and "The Apothecary Diaries" have female protagonists who are small but assertive about their passions (in a comedic way). Mao Mao is very clever in a Sherlock Holmes sort of way and Sei has an instinct that tends to get her into trouble. The dynamics between the girls and their love interests hits a similar comedic vein. Sei is on the serious side and since it's shoujo, pines after the aloof Soji. Mao Mao is seemingly indifferent to Jinshi's advances but they're cute together and help each other out throughout the story. Both series are historicals, one is set in Japan's bakumatsu period and the other takes place in China (not sure about time period). Highly recommend both for a good laugh, historical elements, and a bit of romance. Both are slow burns so don't expect immediate results - but the journey is what matters most right?

"A Sign of Affection" and "A Condition Called Love" both are published under the same magazine (Kodansha's "Dessert") and both feature very wholesome protagonists who are learning how to express love for the first time. "A Sign of Affection" is about a girl who is deaf and a boy who learns sign language to communicate with her and "A Condition Called Love" is about a couple who is mismatched in their levels of passion (overzealous vs. doesn't know what love is) together learning how to match each other's pace. I highly recommend reading both of these as they're both very sweet shoujo stories that leave you feeling as if you've eaten cotton candy. Both stories are also BEAUTIFULLY drawn. If you've read one, you HAVE to read the other! They're so cute.

Akatsuki no Yona
add

Red River is very similar to Yona as they're both fantasy stories about strong female leads doing their best for their respective kingdoms. Yona is a castaway princess trying to understand her place in the world after her father is dethroned and Yuri is a modern Japanese girl thrown into ancient Anatolia isekai style and falls in love with a prince there. Both are high fantasy traveling stories about royalty and the responsibility of those in power towards the common people. The main difference between the two I would say is the romance is more intense in Red River than it is in Yona. But the women in both stories really step up their game to become strong forces for good in the world. I cannot recommend both stories enough!

add

These two mangas aren't too terribly similar but they do feature music and romance. "Nana" takes a band spin and "Gozen 0-ji, Kiss Shi ni Kite yo" takes an idol perspective. I've read a lot of manga related to this theme but when I read "Gozen 0-ji, Kiss Shi ni Kite yo", it made me think of Nana - possibly because the main character's name is Hinana. "Gozen 0-ji, Kiss Shi ni Kite yo" is much more light hearted than "Nana" but I still enjoy it a lot!

Ao no Fuuin
add

I'm only picking one main recommendation, but honestly, if you're a fan of Red River, you will likely LOVE Chie Shinohara's other works. In my opinion, she is best known for writing a good romance as well as a great suspense and action. So, if you liked Red River, delve into her other stories and you will be pleasantly rewarded. I would have to say Ao no Fuuin was very strange for me at the start because Akira looks exactly like Kail, but he doesn't act like him very much even though they both are in positions of leadership. Another fun thing is seeing random character designs who eventually appear as main characters in Red River (keep an eye out for Ursula and a Kash look-a-like [Kai, I think it was]). Both are epic fantasy romances told by an excellent artist although prepare for a lot more blood with Ao no Fuuin. (AnF can be found at Storm in Heaven scanlations. ;) )
