I just read your Higuashi review. There is a reason behind why every one of the characters behaves the way they do in those instances scattered throughout the 26 episodes and behind each and every single event or occurence but it isn't really even delved into at all until the second season. So anyone only watching the first would have good reason to basically not understand anything that is going on, but it's like reading half a book which only reveals its true plot after the midway point. The first half by itself isn't a fully coherent story nor intended to be by deliberate design.
