Strange. Rather strange.
Another one of those idiosyncratic art-styles due to its minimalism. But it's quite interesting especially when the rather child-like simplicity of the art clashes with the dark subject matter, the Vietnam War.
That's interesting and all, but on the whole the characters and the story are...directionless. Or they do have directions, but go all-over the place. It's just so random and nonsensical. I cannot tell if it's bad or intentionally absurd to highlight the strange things war can do. But nonetheless that it didn't really seem well-executed makes it the former for me. Mizu wa Umi ni Mukatte Nagareru

If I was told that there was to be only one manga to survive some cataclysmic catastrophe, it would be this one, the beautifully drawn and written Mizu wa Umi ni Mukatte Nagareru. Somehow, I felt as if this 24 chapter manga was able to bring a story on the level of a good 50 chapter manga; somehow, in spite of its brevity and wispiness, it was delightfully compact and deep.
It is a family drama, a genre I normally detest due to the melodrama and oft-used clichés that are employed, but this story did not unfold like that. The structure of it was unconventional ...

For a long time I have been disenchanted with Sengoku Jidai media for having the same old formula of "we must unify Japan" and the usual sentimental gallantry of a bushido code that wasn't even coined until much later. My fascination with the period ended but then I came across Hyouge Mono which caused me to reverse my decision. How unique this storytelling is! And despite its playing with the facts of history, it seems to me more true to history than other Sengoku Jidai media, and furthermore, more true to human nature.
