Despite all that ... I've never even heard of it? lol...
Anyways, man Baldios is great. Really deserves more recognition. The first episode (and start of the movie) is pretty crazy, lol. I have to wonder since I'm watching the series now, is it generally more drama/talk than mecha/action? If it is I wouldn't mind at all, I honestly keep thinking the whole series could probably work without mecha altogether. But I guess it doesn't hurt either.
The music is really good too, I wonder if the OST is out there... and that song played during episode 2 was epic. I hate vocal tracks in modern anime, because it's usually mainstream crap (Gundam 00's band tracks for example), but old shows actually had songs that seemed like they fit with the series. I loved the "To the Cosmos with you" or whatever it was called in Ideon. Definitely digging all the music in Baldios, since it seems very comparable to Ideon's.
And I'm starting to think that Kaneto Shiozawa is one of my favorite VA's (Marin). I first really noticed him as Oberstein in LOGH and thought his voice was the weirdest I've ever heard, yet oddly cool. Now after that I keep seeming to hear him in older and obscure shows, he's instantly recognizable. I think his perfomance as Marin and other characters alike are hard to believe because he sounds like an entirely different person when he talks loudly or shouts, compared to his soft talking... lol, no idea where I'm going here, but yeah he's awesome. Apparently he's Gray Fox for Metal Gear Solid in the Japanese dub too.
And not to mention his character Ryo in Dancougar seems pretty badass.
I hate to drop stuff and it's still early to judge Dancougar, so I'll definitely stick with it for awhile. Been way too busy lately though, I wish I had more time to watch shows. I liked what I saw and I think I could probably warm up to some of the characters in time, I guess I was just expecting a little much, lol. But yeah, since I've enjoyed a slew of B-grade stuff I'll more than likely see Dancougar through.
And... Hisashi Hirai and Dancougar? Wow, I honestly would not have guessed that at all, haha. Yeah I can't stand his character designs, but some shows like Infinite Ryvius, Heroic Age, managed to be good nonetheless. Yeah Dancougar definitely seems diverse and totally unlike most of his art.
As for the show though, it really does an excellent job at blending in tragedy and comedy. It's grimdark and really knows when to be serious, but it's got a lot of humor and hilarious characters so far too. To me the vibe of the show is a lot like Infinite Ryvius' at times, also comparable to Dougram, and Layzner. I've been incredibly impressed with the intense "scary" scenes, a lot like the stuff in Layzner while they were on the moon and hiding from the sentient mech's, it does a good job at really making you fear for the characters. There also seems to be a lot of realism put into it, there's been a lot of training simulation for the mech's and about 8 episodes in, they still dont' have any character going out in a Vifam or anything and taking out enemies like it's nothing. The characters are very inexperienced and I can kind of tell, they'll probably develop a lot throughout the show.
All in all, I can say I'm extremely impressed so far. I knew it was going to be good and figured I'd like it from all the things I heard, but I didn't think it'd blow me away as much as it is. I guess the staff is really good too, Tomino helped with it, same director as Mellowlink, Dragonar (as well as the music between these two), etc. Awesome stuff.
Dancougar on the other hand, I honestly don't know about. It definitely doesn't seem bad, but yeah. I guess I'm not far at all, maybe it'll grab my attention later? It does have kind of an odd b-grade feel to it ... but oh well, lol. I've enjoyed some of the less popular shows (ZZ, Macross 7), so I'll probably see it through.
Watched the frist episode of Dancougar though and hot damn, I think I'm gonna enjoy this series. Definitely seems awesome.
Another Wakamoto villian eh ... sounds awesome, haha. That and very interesting to hear it's another hybrid between super and real robot shows. Just goes to show it's "mecha" through and through... lol, but I don't mind having "super" and "real" to classify the genre a bit.
And yeah, the cliche "They're dead!" - Next episode "Oh hey I'm not dead" is really annoying too.
I think 00-2 suffers a lot in the same way Code Geass R2 did, they just brought in way too many pointless characters. I never liked Ribbons and this second season has made me hate him even more (I like the jokes about his couch being the cockpit for the Infinity Gundam, or something lol), all the Innovators are just horrible... and then it's like the writers see how worthless they are and decide "Let's kill this person off in 2 seconds", great. They also did an excellent job at raping Graham to death... there's just too much going on and too many characters that the writers can't handle. I should stop myself there though, I rant too much sometimes.
I'm starting to like Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo more, which is kind of sad because it's not really my type of show.
On another random note, what's Dancougar like anyways? I honestly haven't heard much about that one at all.
Also wondering, since you're a mecha fan / similar tastes and all, what are your thoughts on 00-2? I don't know if it's the stench of /m/ that's kind of ruined it for me, but I really think it's a pretty big letdown compared to the first season. It just seems really underwhelming...
Well, hopefully it happens someday and I think I'd even prefer if someone like, the Dougram dude, or a small group (like yourself? heh) like the teams at the msubs forums pick it up. They move faster than "official" groups and I could really careless about how fancy the subs are and such.Well I won't complain either way, but yeah. I think both GP and Kanjisub are kind of out of the picture here... they're going at ACR speed at the moment.
How far did the VHS scripts go up to?
I think I'm leaning on just waiting it out, more. I mean heck the first half was so good if it's a long wait for more subs, I could just rewatch it, lol. I'm pretty interested in what the mystery behind the Layzner is too ... when it went berserk twice on Eiji. I love how Takahashi always riddles his shows with supernatural stuff a bit here and there (though I wonder if that's the case for Dougram?).
Randomly throwing this out there, but have you ever thought of taking the series up for translating, or maybe just the OVA's? I'm sure it's an annoying question, but I just can't help but get excited whenever Layzner is up for discussion... lol.
So they're doing a BR release of Baldios? Just the movie or both the movie and series? I'll definitely let you know if I find the raws or anything.
And thanks for the link for Dancougar, just goes to show you can't trust MAL if there's no sub group listed. I thought I even checked nyaatorrents, but oh well. Man it sucks I can only download a bit at the moment since I'm running so low on HD space, lol, but I'm thinking I'll pick up a 1TB HD this Friday with my paycheck.
And yeah I'd be up for helping you sub stuff if need be, especially since I'm almost done with Mellowlink I'm kind of wondering what else I could do. I'm definitely no professional or anything and can only do editing/QC and basic encoding, but I guess it's something. Just let me know if you ever want help on something or whatnot.
Either way I thought it was great and I'd be very interested in watching the series, the story in general and the setting was very cool. So I definitely hope things work out on your side of things, if you end up subbing the series eventually (also like you were saying, a DVD rip version of the movie would be great too!)... loved the music too, I just can't get enough of classic anime scores. I thought of Macross quite a bit with this one.
Also as for the subs, excellent job on them. They were very professional and just really well done, timing, etc, everything.
