As of writing this review, I have watched episode 21 of this anime.
Something that should be noted before diving into this series is that it's not for people who have a low tolerance for suggestive content. This show dives headfirst and won't shy away from such content.
That being said, I am truly in love with this show. I've been following it ever since its first season aired earlier this year. Studio Bind has been doing an amazing job adapting this legendary light novel, and I pray that they continue to keep up the good work. Let's split this review into categories so I can best
...
present the entirety of the show's greatness to you. Because this is a season two review, there will be light spoilers of the first season within this review.
ART
I've never been one to praise an anime for its art because I'm a firm believer that the art in an anime doesn't dictate how good the anime is, can, or will be, but the art in Mushoku Tensei DESERVES to be addressed. This studio did a wonderful job at adapting important conflict, locations, and characters from the manga with outstanding attention to detail. The dynamic backgrounds, character design and the grainy film that is present throughout the show gives the entire series a cinematic feel that I personally love. At times, I feel as though I'm watching a movie, only to be reminded at the end of the episode that it was in fact 24 minutes.
SOUND
I will praise the sound effects in Mushoku Tensei for doing what it needs to do. I can't say that the sound effects quality is on par with that of other anime that are recognized and praised for their sound effects quality (Namely Fire Force and Fate), but I will say that every sound blends in with the show to make it run very fluently and immerse you deeper into the world. While the sound effects don't bring anything inherently special to the table, its music definitely does. I cannot tell you the number of times I've paused the show and added one of their amazing tracks to my playlist. Whether it be an opening, ending, or just and OST, Mushoku Tensei nails all three categories. Since we're on the subject of openings, I would like to take a bit of time to appreciate the quality thoughtfulness of Mushoku Tensei's. This anime's openings are literally un-skippable. No really, try. You won't be able to, and the reason being is because the opening is always tied into the story. As the opening of the show plays, a slideshow of establishing shots, characters, and events all take place, further enhancing this show's storytelling. I cannot express how much I love this.
CHARACTER
Mushoku Tensei's characters are all easily S+ tier. No hesitation, no doubt. I see a lot of people talk negatively about Rudeus, Paul and other male characters in the anime, but I don't understand why they think they're so bad. The writer did an excellent job at portraying that even if someone does bad things, it doesn't make them a bad person. That realistic, mature mindset made me fall in love with all of Mushoku Tensei's characters. Take Paul for example. In the fourth episode of Mushoku Tensei's first cour, we see that Paul cheated on his wife Zenith for their house maid and got her pregnant. Obviously, Paul was in the wrong. He was a scummy character that made a very bad decision and it almost cost him the life of the maid and her child. But despite all of that, Paul is still a respected character. Just like you and me have done bad things in our past, and will continue to do bad things in the future, these characters are the same way. This series doesn't try to paint these characters as saints who have never done and will never do any wrong ever. Instead, it's a realistic portrait of the real human person.
ENJOYMENT
It should go without saying that I am loving this series. My enjoyment from this series is extraordinarily high and I don't think that it will go down anytime soon.
OVERALL
I wish that people would come to accept the main character Rudeus and enjoy this amazing adventure. I cannot express how much I've fallen in love with this anime, so give it a watch and I can almost guarantee that you will too.
