holy crap is this one GOOD anime. the premise of a small village where the mysterious "oyashiro-sama" inflicts a violent curse on certain people, and the division of a master arc into different subplots with unique setups makes this a bona-fide psychological thriller, with an emphasis on the psychological part. the series makes you constantly question who the villain is going to be for each arc, and how this ragtag group of friends unravel every few episodes. while i'm not usually a fan of supernatural anime since it most often tends to follow a similar trajectory across most, but with Higurashi, the focus is less
...
on the supernatural aspect and more on how the curse itself transforms the individuals it affects, and how their interactions with the people around them begin a chain reaction of events that leads to a violent and bloody conclusion in every arc. since this anime is pretty old, it does stick to the original character tropes and doesn't necessarily have a diverse cast, but it's more than made up for with excellent character development, either through the introduction of trauma or a questionable display of basic human emotions and morality.
verdict? it's not for the faint of heart, but if you're looking for a thriller that WILL keep you on the edge of your seat, then there are few anime better than Higurashi to sate that need. the twisted portrayal of humans and their interactions with each other lead for a complex and terrifying series, and it's most definitely worth watching.

seeing a lot of people suggest the manga over the anime, but i don't think OPM season 2 is bad - it's rather fun to watch and makes for an interesting follow up to the original. we get to see the continuation of saitama and genos' adventures, but with a bit more gravitas this time around, showing (similar to Boku no Hero Academia) the reality of a world where superheroes have become commonplace, and how that gets embedded into the capitalistic nature of society. even though OPM 2 tackles some serious themes, it still manages to stay lighthearted and keep the same pace as the
...
original, introducing new characters and (potentially) stronger villains for saitama to test his mettle against (and for genos to become modern art in his attempt to defeat aforementioned villains), and despite being the most powerful hero in the world, somehow end up overshadowed by others to his dismay (a moment of silence for saitama's non-existent fan club). fight sequences are better, and the guitar-based music gets riff-ier, making for one stylish and hilarious anime.
verdict? if you liked OPM, you'll like season 2. given it's a direct continuation of the first season, i do suggest watching season 1 first, but both remain hilarious and action-packed, and make for a genuinely fun time.

absolutely love this anime - OPM seems like it'll be stifled with no development and a lack of depth because of the way it's structured, but ultimately that's never been the point of it. this anime comes off to me as a series that's meant to be enjoyed rather than thought critically about (ironic given how i posited my stance on "Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken") because it creates a unique atmosphere where the protagonist is pretty much invulnerable and undefeatable yet finds himself overshadowed by others (most of whom are just posers, hilariously). saitama clearly is the best, but aside from a few handful
...
of people, not many people even know who he is - and that invites a ton of comedy and fun moments that end with interesting rivalries, some wholesome moments, and ultimately some of the best action sequences in anime (Shingeki no Kyojin, Samurai Champloo and Berserk aside).
verdict? the voice acting, art style and lighthearted writing give OPM so much watch (and re-watch) potential, making for an anime that's here to spur some crazy cool action sequences (looking at you, genos) and a myriad of hilarious moments (jack-o-lantern panic vs. caped baldy). totally worth watching!

this one's a hot take since a lot of people love rimuru, but imo it's not that great of a series. isekai anime always interests me since it's about a total change in circumstances for our main protagonist, but with this series, it kinda just turns into a series of "good" events that are captured with little to no weight for our favourite slime, and that keeps the anime from progressing far. rimuru can use his skills to absorb and analyse anything, which means ultimately he can't be defeated, and that creates a situation where there's no potential for development in the character (and not
...
to mention the motif of "empowering peace throughout the lands" becomes stale when everyone ends up either siding with rimuru in an alliance or becoming a loyal subject that dotes on him like a god, which isn't a bad thing, just something that gets stale pretty quick). there's definitely some fun to be had with this series, but ultimately it doesn't seem to go anywhere, and sticks to the default anime tropes way too strongly.
verdict? it's structure is very mainstream, so if you don't mind watching an anime that's going to make you feel happy without much thinking or criticality, then this one's up your alley. a diverse cast and some fun moments do make this a decent watch, but the lack of serious development hinders its potential to be something good.

i'd held off on watching this anime for a while since i personally don't like watching mainstream anime (or even those set up as shonen) since they tend to stretch plotlines and occupy screentime as much as possible, but i was pleasantly surprised by this series and what it set out to do. of course, standard disclaimer for all my reviews in that i haven't read the associated manga, but the first season of Boku no Hero Academia shows so much promise, with a set of characters that fit specific tropes (not always the ones we may believe initially) and an overarching plot that sets
...
out to show the story of accomplishment through sheer willpower and the belief in one's self-worth. the series can be a bit cumbersome at times, with multiple sequences turning into the "naruto stare-and-see" type scenarios (where it's just a period of a few minutes where there's almost no development and is instead filled with scenes of characters staring at each other with overwhelming determination. the series does suffer from having a primary protagonist who's essentially just a floppy piece of bread and ultimately amounts to the default trope of "standard anime character who can't accomplish anything worthwhile, but is seeing their circumstances change in a way that forces him to act outside his comfort zone. deku isn't a great character, but seeing his classmates develop around him is what makes this series great in my opinion, and sets the stage for some really interesting subplots and interactions between different characters and factions down the line, which i believe is the most important factor in this series being solid in the long run.
verdict? give it a watch if you're into action and superhero anime, though if you want something fresh and new, then this might not be for you since it will follow the path of a go-lucky and happy anime with consequences that never end up seeming permanent.

easily one of the worst anime i've ever seen - even though the ecchi content might appeal to some, it's not that great unfortunately, and with everything else lacking in a significant capacity it ends up being a really rough watch. the premise starts with an idol who's trying to stand up for one of her groupmates in a scuffle with a pro wrestler, which turns out to be a display of extreme overconfidence, and the rest of the series progresses to show her suffering humiliating defeats (though i can't speak for the end since i had to drop it due to the staggeringly poor
...
quality) while she continues to pursue this pipe dream of becoming "the strongest in the world". the voice acting is miserable, with 80% of the total series being filled with irritating groans and squeals of pain, which get old VERY quickly, and with the lacklustre plot, it doesn't ever add up to anything worthwhile. this anime isn't that old, but it's art style is very generic and uninspired, with shows like Initial D having a fantastically better personality than this series despite coming out almost an entire decade earlier.
verdict? pass on this one. there are far better ecchi anime out there, and this one is definitely not worth the watch since the fanservice is severely lacking and every other aspect of the show doesn't make it bearable enough to sit through a few minutes of oppai scenes.
