First of all, GTO isn’t for everyone. The premise is a hard sell but, if given the chance, it may very well end up as one of your favourite anime.
To me GTO is probably the most important piece of entertainment in my life. And because revolves around teaching, I want to tell you what GTO taught me.
GTO isn’t just an anime, but, if you truly embrace the message it tries to teach, it’s a lifestyle, and one that i’ve tried my best to follow.
You see, Onizuka truly personifies what, in my opinion, means to be happy and a good person.
Now, why do I think Onizuka

is the perfect representation of a “good person”?. Well, he isn’t a guy who spends his life trying to make other people happy, but he does his best, mostly, to avoid annoying/screwing with other‘s life. Plus, if you really need his help, he will do anything within his power to help them.
This doesn’t mean Onizuka is always right, or that his methods are the best, but that’s the thing, they don’t need to. No one is always correct or has the perfect answer, and that’s okay. Onizuka may be a pervert, good for nothing, with some extreme teaching methods, kind of rude guy who thinks mostly about himself or what benefits him, but even then, he is a good person.
And why do I think Onizuka represents what it means to be happy? Well, you see, for the longest I thought being happy meant having no problems in your life. “If I had no problems then i would be happy” is what I thought. What GTO taught me is that being happy isn’t about how many problems you have, but about how you face them. And when Onizuka has troubles, which is most of the time, he faces them the best way he knows: by just being himself.
And that’s where I think they key of happiness is: no matter how many hardships you go through, how many problems you have, always stay true to yourself.
Now, I know I haven’t touched a lot of the other themes of the show, like depression, neglect, love, sorrow, redemption, etc. nor have I talk about other aspects of it apart from Onizuka’s character and his effect on me, like how utterly hilarious the show is. But I really wanted to focus on how it affected me and what it taught me.
I also have some quick thoughts which I think are important: the art is extremely versatile and the animation, although not always great, when it shines it‘s truly a sight to behold, full extremely funny facial expressions, perfect comedic timing and extremely fluid movements. The OST is easily the best one i’ve heard on any anime, and the OPs, oh those OPs, total and absolute masterpieces. And the characters, while annoying in the beginning, go through huge changes throughout the show, and you really end up knowing and having emotional connections with them.
Also worth noting, the ending is anime original, so if you feel like it doesn’t give you enough closure, try reading the manga, which is even better in some parts and, although it lacks the mind blowing soundtrack, it makes up for it with some gorgeous artwork.
Really, I can’t recommend this anime enough. The best thing I can say is: give it a try, it might change your life.
