I remember when the trailer for this movie first came out, a lot of people were hyped for it. I didn't think too much of it because the movie didn't catch my eye and I was overall just not interested.

On a whim, I decided to watch the movie and I was very confused as to what I had just watched. So, I did some digging.

Turns out, the movie is an adaptation of a manga.

If you've never read the manga like me, you will be very confused watching the movie. You'll get the tldr as the movie goes on, but it'll be choppy and confusing at ... best. Most of the scenes won't really mean much to you or make a whole lotta sense.

Shun and Mio's characters were flat, but had a lot of potential, which I'm sure was better explored in the manga. Having not read the manga though, this didn't come across in the movie.

With lots of cutscenes, like they were animating specific chapters from the manga, the movie is like a chronological patchwork quilt of scenes the studio felt were important, but made no sense to the casual viewer.

I really enjoyed the background art though. The bright colors of the flowers, the scenery, you could tell the studio went all out with the background. Each frame you could pause and cut into a wallpaper for your phone and still find it aesthetically pleasing.

Overall, I'm left with the impression that for a casual viewer like myself, the hype surrounding the movie and its appeal is lost on me. However, if I had read the manga ahead of time, maybe my impression would be different.

I went into this anime with high expectations, seeing as everyone was calling it the anime of 2020. I wanted to give this anime a 7 initially, but by the time I finished it, I felt like giving it a 5 would be too generous. So I settled for a 3.

It’s like buying a jelly/cream filled donut and finding air in the middle instead. You can’t even feel ripped off because the outside is so greasy, it’d probably give you a stomachache anyways.

The art was beautiful. I enjoyed the scenes aesthetically, and while there were moments where Moriarty looked like a big brain misshapen alien, ... it was still a beautifully drawn anime. Vaguely had Black Butler vibes to it.

Moriarty as a character was cold and flat. Nothing remarkable about him. The way he and his merry band of homicidal fanatics behaved, it looked like they were copy/pasted into scenes to save time and you couldn’t even tell the difference. Moriarty was meant to be a charismatic villain, I think? But he wasn’t even that. Heck, he wasn’t even really cold. Just completely flat and devoid of emotion. Like a puppet speaking lines. When they introduced Sherlock, it wasn’t even a big deal. What’s sad is that for how little Sherlock was in it, he looked more like a villainous playboy/deadbeat than a misanthropic genius. It wasn’t so much ‘Moriarty the Patriot’, but ‘Moriarty and Sherlock: Trying to find a personality’.

The one positive of this whole fiasco was the background music and sound effects. There is one scene in one of the episodes that was a glorious 10 or second ASMR clip.

Plot? What plot? Moriarty’s whole shtick was ‘Death to the Bad Nobles’, but he, Louis and Albert were bad nobles too? But I guess it’s okay since they’re the ‘right kind’ of bad noble. Honestly, it wasn’t about three nobles sticking it to society, it was about Moriarty forcing people to murder on his behalf with his fanatical followers. Sherlock was just along for the ride of be the paper foil to the second half of the plot and give some appearance of a ‘personality’ and failing.

Overall, I found this series to be a waste of time. Its only redeeming quality was the art and music. Moriarty the Patriot? More like Moriarty the Hypocrite and his murderous sycophants.

P.S. Shout out to that final scene, you the real Black Butler ripoff MVP.

There really isn't much to say about this. It's 5 minutes long. Kind of a short film.

A bit of a surreal piece tbh. Cute though. The animation/art at certain points was a bit wonky, but overall was pretty good. The only criticism was that at some points, the main character's head looked squished/oddly oblongated due to the animation style, but except for the awkward head, everything else was drawn beautifully. Each still was as pretty as a painting. Ya know, the kind of thing people would turn into desktop wallpapers and such.

The art was beautiful, the music was well-timed, the male character was pretty interesting, ... in an existential sort of way. It's not overly depressing either. Sure it seems like it initially, but you quickly realize through the art and music, it's not meant to be depressing.

Overall, it was a cute piece. A five minute what-if scenario. It was very cute and easy to watch. If you have five minutes free and nothing better to do, I'd recommend watching it.

SIX minutes of strobing lights. I feel sick. It really screws with your head.

It was like an artist wanted a creative way to show off their portfolio so they said "yes, let's strobe it!" because that'll obviously make it better, right? RIGHT? No.

There was nothing to say? I mean, it's literally an artist's portfolio animated with some lowquality/cheap/free video editor. It's not 'experimental' or 'dark' it's just an animated portfolio meant to make you sick to disguise the fact that the artist is preeeetty mediocre at best.

All in all, don't watch in a dark room, don't watch at night, and definitely have a barf ... bag next. to you for when the flashing screen makes you sick. Or maybe.....just don't watch it at all.... yeah. Do that.

This is a claymation, not an anime. Why is this on MAL? I'm so confused.

Apparently the creator of this is some prolific guy. To be honest, I thought that this was a college students final project/thesis thing..... or maybe that's too generous and I should say a highschool student's final project.

The only reason this wasn't a 1 in my books is because it had a story, was mostly consistent, and the story was simple. Guy's in the woods, meets a zombie. Simple and straightforward.

But yeah no, this is bad, really bad. It's also only 5 minutes total. Watch it, or don't that's up to you.

Since I'm watching some other anime that are currently getting roasted, I figured I'd keep up the terrible anime choices train and give skelter+heaven a watch.

Let me tell you: It does not disappoint!

This is so bad! I have no idea who any of these characters are, insert terrible cut scenes, an ill-timed and ill-placed backstory cut, and you are sure to be confused! Music? What music? Sound? It sounded like they tried to rip off the Gundam sfx from some shady third party site, and called it good.

The art is a healthy mix of late 90s and early 00s art(fitting since it was released in ... 04), but like, it's the worst parts of it. You remember those books you saw at bookstores "How to draw manga"? Yeah, the art kinda looks like that.

This anime 100% lives up to my expectation as a terrible anime. lol.

This is like the live action show 'Leverage', but in anime form.

The story was great, if admittedly predictable. I think in all 23 episodes, there was only one thing that surprised me. Doesn't take away from the story though. The story is pretty formulaic, and sort of hams along each non-main character's backstory, but it works in a weird way so you don't really mind it.

Art - The art was really nice. There were comical scenes within the animals, and beautiful scenes within the anime. It was precise and well done. Fortunately, I have yet to see one of those horrible animation stills, so I ... can't complain too much about the art, if at all.

Sound - I feel like the jazz, and the vocal music were all really suited to the atmosphere and the vibe the anime was going for. I think the composer did an excellent job, because switching the music genre would have taken away from the scene and lessened the impact of everything.

Character - The characters had some depth to them. Especially the ML and secondary-ML. That said, the other characters fell a little flat in their motivations/personalities. Sure they had tragic/sad backstories, but they weren't particularly as memorable as they could have been.

Enjoyment - I really did enjoy the series, it was great to kick back and watch while relaxing.

Overall, the anime was an 8 for me. I couldn't give it a 10 because of a certain thing which I can't say here. I also couldn't due to the secondary characters who felt a little flat to me.

Would I recommend it? Yes. Would I watch it again? Yes.

Beautiful art, each frame a gorgeous still.

It's the kind of art you'd see set to summer lofi aesthetic livestreams.

I don't quite get the story, but the music and the art were so beautiful, it seemed criminal to rate it lower than a 9. The story seemed complex, beautiful and as mysterious as the ocean is deep.

The art and the music were beautifully timed. The randomness of Umi and Sora's different nationalities when the story was set on an island in Japan was strange, but the art was beautiful. What was really interesting was that each frame when there were eyes, the eyes were ... drawn incredibly detailed and reflective to mirror the emotion of the scene. It was great, whether it was the crystal clear blue of Sora's eyes or the rich depth to Umi's eyes, you really felt the connection with them. As the saying goes the eyes are the windows to the soul and you could really feel the soul of the movie through each character's eyes.

The personalities were admittedly bland, but you felt for them, and related to them purely with how they were framed, the way they were drawn, the depth of detail.

All in all, it's a gorgeous movie, the art, and the music really do sell the whole thing, and make up for the confusing parts of the plot in the movie.

I put off watching Promare.

I knew Promare was in the art style of anime such as Kill La Kill. I was not a fan of Kill La Kill by any means, and couldn't finish it. So needless to say, I approached this move with trepidation. I was prepared to not like it. Prepared to end up dropping it halfway through.

I was not prepared to like it!

I mean yeah the story is straightforward, cliched a bit, but whatever. The OST was perfect, well-timed and well suited for each scene. It totally helped sell the anime and blew me away. You could say, I was.... burning ... up for this movie once it was over.

Not to say this movie is perfect, but it's pretty dang good and I 100% do not regret watching it! I'm so glad I finally settled down to watch it. It was definitely worth watching.

EDIT: OMG! It makes so much sense now! The director of this anime does mainly hentai. This is their first 'ecchi' series. But then again, there's not much you can do when the source material is trash. But it does clear up a few things.

What does an anime look like when the voice actors, and staff don't really want to work on an anime but need something to fill a slot, and are paid to do it anyways? Answer: Peter Grill to Kenja no Jikan.

I never thought I would ever say this about an anime, but it is utterly, utterly, utterly unredeemable. I can't ... say one nice thing about it. The fan service isn't even worth it. The vibe reminds me of Ishuzoku Reviewers, but the cheap, knock-off, poor quality, low effort, budget version. I feel sorry for the staff who had to work on this and whose name is forever tarnished by this steaming heap of trash.

Do not watch it. You'll only come out of it feeling disappointed and sad, like the abandoned half-eaten burrito someone left on the train.
