Mixed Feelings

Just saw this in theaters, and I'm not sure if I can call this good or not. I won't make this horribly long, just sharing the vibes of it.

First off, I cannot overstate just how fantastic this film was from an artistic standpoint. Whenever there's a music number (that's right babey, this is a musical), I was absolutely entranced. Mirai Moriyama and Avu-chan absolutely killed it, their performances sucked me into this underdeveloped story more than they should have. Side note, I think it's hilarious that the professional dancer voices the singer character and vice versa? The animation and choreography had the messiness that Yuasa ...

Id:Invaded (Anime) add

It's been about a year and a half since I watched Id:Invaded, and there hasn't been a week that's passed where I haven't thought of it. While I absolutely adore it, it's far from perfect. I started it because I'm constantly checking out series that I classify as "what I wish Psycho-Pass was", where it stands along with Zankyou no Terror and B: The Beginning (s1).

I should note, Id: Invaded isn't as visually stunning or put together as these other series, not by a long shot. Visually, it's borderline ugly and there are some comedically awful bits of animation. Despite that, there's almost a charm ... to this inconsistency of quality. You can get an intense scene with beautifully rendered explosions, and then a scene where a man's face shifts like a powerpoint when he turns his head. You never know what you'll get, and that's hilarious to me even if others may dislike it.

While the sound effects themselves are nothing to write home about, the OST is full of insert songs that suit the scenes they accompany wonderfully. A couple tracks by MIYAVI are what most people know about this series, but the (still unreleased) track from episode 9 has me going back and rewatching the scene, even if it means that I hear the characters speaking over it. It's that damn good. Maybe my most rewatched scene of all time, and for both the moment and the song.

The story is....fine. Having rewatched it several times, the beginning is a lot slower than the rest of the show (it's okay until about episode 7, where it becomes something special). That's a huge investment for people who may not even know if they'll like the show, and I get it. When it does become "special" (in my eyes), it also goes absolutely off the rails, which I also know folks may not be a huge fan of. It's a sci-fi show that doesn't explain its technology and you just kind of have to go with it.

The characters, to me, are what make this show. Narihisago and Fukuda are two of my all time favorite characters, because they aren't these morally perfect beings. They have their own priorities and act upon them, sometimes working against the idea of "justice". Never once did it feel like these characters deviated from their core values or acted out of character, even if their actions were surprising.
It should be noted that I watched the dub of this series (even with my rewatches), and think that some of the side characters have flat performances, but that's made up for by just how much effort and power the main trio put behind their performances.

Being honest, this show is an absolute mess. Half of it is "just okay", and half of it is a 10/10 for me until the very ending. That's because there really isn't an ending. Even the follow-up manga, which presents some absolutely fantastic ideas and additions to the world (mysteries or otherwise), doesn't provide a satisfying conclusion.

TL;DR. While this is one of my favorite shows and I'll champion it until the end of time for its fantastic characters, the first half is pretty slow and "just okay" and there's no real ending. This isn't for everyone. If you don't like these characters at all or aren't a fan of sci-fi shows that don't explain themselves, I'd steer clear of it.

This is a fully personal review and score. This OVA won't mean a lot to most people, and that's fine. The MAL score really is appropriate for how short this is, for how little there is.

That being said.

I cried almost the entire time watching this OVA. For reference, I played golf all throughout high school and still play now. It captures the energy, the camaraderie despite gaps in skill, the slight inconveniences. Hitting the tree was the realest thing ever, and I'm not joking at all.

This. THIS. Is the golf anime I have been waiting for. Even if we only get just this OVA and ...
