K-ON is not a grand masterpiece. But I don't think it was ever trying to be.
This series has both been the subject of great praise and scathing criticism, and perhaps the true nature of the anime lies in the middle of both opinions.
K-ON is a good anime, and a good comedy. Not a great anime nor a great comedy, but also, not a bad anime nor a bad comedy.

Lucky Star is one of those odd shows that build its popularity and success off of directly parodying famous concepts of anime, games and manga.
Yet at the same time, it functions as more than just a parody, and serves as a story about four girls who are going through high school. This is definitely a fan pleaser, with moe art and cute stuff, and lots and lots of references to famous anime like Code Geass, Higurashi and Kanon. While it serves its purpose, some of the comedy drags or is too reliant on the parodies. I haven't seen half these anime they talk about, so it ...

Now, it might seem a bit weird giving an anime a 10 like Ichigo Mashimaro, but this is to be justified. I am rating this on how well it works as a comedy, not as "a masterful piece of visionary art". Since it is not.
A master comedy? Why yes, it is. Ichigo Mashimaro has an unusual sense of humour and that will be noticeable right off the bat. The story is dependent on timing and the subtlety of the humour. While there are instances of pure crazy slapstick, most of the comedy comes from the sarcastic remarks or the feeling of "yeah, life's like that" aspect ... |
