Interesting since I didn't really enjoy the song much, but like the OP's visuals. I think it was fitting, but probably I like the ED so much more that I appreciate DOWN TOWN less. Maaya Sakamoto OPs (from the ones I've watched) have been pretty hit-and-miss for me, I think there's always something lacking.
Nothing suits Hotori more than Chiaki Omigawa's voice. I honestly think it's her best role.
Well, that applies to all other Shaft shows though, they're very hard to describe. I don't know how they do it, but they always seem to have a way with blending their style regardless of the source material they're adapting, while emphasizing the strength of the source material too. The Zetsubou and SoreMachi manga seem to not differ from their anime counterparts, but you can recognize it's Shaft.
Wait, Round Table did music for SoreMachi? Where'd you find out? They aren't credited on their MAL pages.
I feel like it works on the same atmosphere as K-On based on what I see, so I’m interested. I hope Liz and the Blue Bird can improve Hibike. As much as I admire the series for its technical prowess and interesting characters (obviously Kumiko heh), I always felt a sort of disconnect with the show and the second season as a whole was just unenjoyable for me.
Yeah I think that earns a top spot in my favorite OPs too. I just feel sad that the anime ended adapting like that. Seemed like DVD sales were low compared to how much of a breakout hit S1 is so it just stopped like that entirely. I love Ringo Mogire Beam as a song, but I think I still prefer the Kuusou Rumba rap. That gets me jamming everytime lol.
I wanted to keep reading the manga but I felt like the anime was enough of an experience for me to know everything about the franchise so I went ahead and read the last 10 chapters. I got spoiled about it early on but that was a really perfect ending to the series. Feels like Monogatari where everything was already set in place before we even knew it.
On the topic of Shaft, how’re you liking SoreMachi? It’s probably Shaft’s most underappreciated show. No one I know even talks about it.
I just checked out Digi’s video on the K-On anime being an adaptation—I really gotta commend Naoko Yamada now. I want to see more of her work in the future. Tamako Market should be next for me, I guess.
By the way, after going through all possible Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei content I gotta say this show defines Shaft, not Monogatari. Zan Bangaichi’s second OP is probably the best Shaft OP I have ever seen, too. Three minutes of pure animation wildness. Do you know about the manga ending?
I'm gonna watch Keikaku and the film shortly after, I'm just taking a break because I'm too struck with how good it is right now and I need some time to stop crying. I think I liked Azusa more after the last couple of episodes. If S2 was already this great then I need to prepare myself for the movie.
Good thing you got around to watching it the time the seventh S2 OVA just got fansubbed. There's more that the franchise would offer all the way up to 2019 lol.
Mugi is underappreciated I think mostly for the fact that she’s never really given a significant amount of focus compared to other Keions. You have entire episodes about the rest of the K-On’s lives but she never gets one that’s remotely significant to knowing her character. In being replicable, I’d agree about Yui being hard to imitate. Though I feel like I can’t enjoy Yui’s character without the other characters, which is why I can’t take much interest in her.
I just reached Episode 20 and I teared a bit inside. The emotions in that whole episode felt so nostalgic and real. I’m considering an 8 now lol.
It probably has to do with me wanting to watch the stuff I’m watching along with K-On, because I feel like if I binge it I might not be able to balance it out and get behind the other shows. It’s hard to binge the shows I decided to watch along with it.
I’ve got a bit of a love-hate relationship with SYD in general. I prefer reading the 4-koma, but the anime adaptations have some standout moments that make it enjoyable. I do believe S2 of SYD is the best entry in the franchise, but after that (at least in my opinion) it goes downhill. I still have to watch the film though. Watching the anime really makes it fun because of the voice acting, especially when you know who voices who (try to guess who my favorite character is).
Well it would be a minute long if I decided to add in the context of the scenes, but the NANAs sound so seamless that I opted to just include the NANA parts. Hope someone makes a Hahi compilation next time :D
I wonder how I’d feel about it when I rewatch it. From my experience right now though, I think S1 is nice and S2 is a very enjoyable watch. I have to stop myself from wanting to binge it lol.
Even in K-On we have similar tastes lmao. I’m rotating back and forth on who’s my favorite Keion though, I started off with Mio but the gags about her kinda got stale in S1 so I shifted to Mugi (who did nothing wrong with the strawberry incident). Right now though, I still like Mio a lot, but the few moments where Mugi becomes the focus is golden. Have to admit though, I’m not much into Yui (and at times I prefer Ui instead) but all of their character interactions makes every episode impossible to watch without one of them around.
I’m still having a hard time processing that Yoko Hikasa and Satomi Sato are in SYD, plus the fact that Satomi Sato also voices Chitanda
I finally made that compilation I’ve been timestamping from the Aria rewatch, just sharing the link in cased you missed it: https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/83qeo5/clipspoilers_every_aika_nana_ever_aria_the/
I’ve been going through some of your favorites lately lol, K-On has been a totally enjoyable show so far. Who’s your favorite Keion, btw?
And here I am consuming every bit of it lol. I guess she had her prime already.
There’s still a Director’s Cut? That’s some valuable knowledge to me. I rewatched Eva last December without knowing that the BD had a Director’s Cut as well. Now I need to rewatch it again lol.
Man, you don’t know how glad I was to see Ryou Hirohashi in the cast list. Even though she barely had screentime hearing her voice in a recent show was pretty delightful.
By the way, do you think Chiwa Saito would still have a new main role? It seems like she’s only been getting supporting character roles these days (save her usual ones such as Monogatari recently).
LWA was honestly a typical show to the brim but that’s what made it so enjoyable. I’m in the process of revamping my rating system, but if I’m counting sequels my AOTY is probably Owari S2. Then again, I still need to watch the ones you mentioned. Is Rakugo recommended even without knowledge of the art? I just want to make sure I know proper context about it before I begin it.
I just realized that Houseki has a wide variety of popular and veteran voice actresses, and for Tomoya to be able to stand out within these others is really impressive. Ayane Sakura as Bort was honestly surprising for me though lol.
Rakugo is another show I should try out sometime, but my mood really differs at times. What were your other favorites of 2017 though? As far as the non-sequels I’ve watched LWA is probably my AOTY (still have a lot to watch, but yeah).
The way she handles awkward noises in Hibike makes me feel awkward as well, it takes me in so much lol. That’s a fun fact about Houseki! From her MAL page it seems like people are liking her performance far more than Hibike, so that’s something to look forward to.
Same here, but I think she’s a bit miscast based on some of the shows I’ve watched with her in. For example, I think she doesn’t fit P-ko from Arakawa Under the Bridge. It’s really unique though, and she’s one of the reasons I loved Hotori in SoreMachi. I hope she gets more recognition—her voice stands out compared to the waves of moe voices I’ve been hearing everywhere.
