10 - Masterpiece's that are flawless or whose flaws are so small, both in quantity and size, that they don't ruin the overall experience given whatsoever.
This being said, a show given a 10 also has to have depth. There are plenty of shows that although flawless, or close enough, don't provide enough content/depth to truly make me feel satisfied. Many consider the feeling of wanting more after a show's conclusion a good thing, however I would argue that a perfect 10/10 show would conclude so perfectly that you are satisfied and wouldn't want/need to see anymore of its content. Case in point the shows that I have given a 10.
(This doesn't include wanting to see some sort of spin-off series, as that starts a whole new story, just using the same characters. So don't think you one “up'ed” this point.)
As a general rule, 10s must be unique and engaging, have subtle and profound themes, be innovative and original, be devoid of plot holes, not use overly-convenient plot devices, have complexity, have quality characters, have trajectory, and have masterful expositions and resolutions.
My one exception for this rule is for comedies, as their goal as a show isn’t to necessarily show subtle and profound themes but to simply make you laugh. That said they should still follow all of the other rules if wanting to hit a 10.
9 - Amazing shows that either hit all of the checkmarks that make up a 10 but lack depth or shows that have deep depth but may not fully hit all of the checkmarks.
(Examples of both these scenarios are 1. Ping Pong The Animation: This show hit all of the checkmarks to become a 10/10, but with only 11 episodes it left me with the feeling of wanting more scenes/content. 2. Hunter X Hunter: This show had profound depth and masterful exposition, however there was a plot-hole towards the end, that while minor enough to not negate the beauty the rest of the show gave us, did prevent the show from becoming a 10.)
8 - Overall really great solid shows that I would still consider top tier and highly recommendable. What usually makes a show an 8 but not a 9 are certain qualities and/or flaws that while still relatively insignificant compared to the rest of the list, nonetheless bring it down from a 9.
7 - Good shows that were still enjoyable to watch, however they either A. Had potential but were let down by flaws that overpowered the overall experience or B. They used the same basic formula that many other shows have used but they at least did it in a way that was respectable. While the lack of originality is usually one of the key factors that prevent many of these 7s from reaching 8s, they still do deserve some praise from the stuff they did do well.
6 - Okay. Shows given a 6 are shows that don’t do anything new and cool and many times use dumb tropes seen all the time. Although these basic plot points and/or tropes kill me everytime, they still do have their moments that make them decent and above a 5.
5 - Mediocre from an overall standpoint. Meaning, it could have had some good parts that would have made it a 6 or even 7 but were then equally neutralized by bad parts. This rating could have also just come from the fact that the show was maybe a bit too boring and/or common.
4 - Almost had it. 4s are shows that are just not quite there. The overall theming could have made the show a 5 or 6 but the horrible execution held it back.
3 - Bad. Most of the time these happen to be shows whose only plot point is fan-service and lack any other interesting characteristic. Most of these shows start being flawed from the very base/frame of its plot and would need to have a total reconstruction to be better.
2 - Horrible shows that are only saved from being a 1 because of a single factor.
1 - Shows that I no longer consider shows for how appalling they truly are.
- Credit to Polyphemus for some of the wording I used
Child, Shirou did not defeat me at all. On the contrary, I was destroying that dim boy and he was completely at my mercy (this was even more clear in the original visual novel. The movie made the fight look more even than it originally was).
Unfortunately, the grail mud keeping me alive gave out. This is certainly not a victory for him; not least because I did succeed in killing Emiya Shirou - his body died shortly afterwards. The only reason he survived was thanks to ridiculous plot hacks that allowed his friends to capture his soul and put him into a puppet. I wish I was joking, but it really was that dumb.
