-- I HAVE NOT YET READ THE MANGA --
Koe no Katachi is a very good movie that tackles very serious social topics in a splendid manner. This is my first review on this site, so forgive me if this review is not proper or if it doesn't follow the proper review format.
Story - 9/10:
The story progresses very well throughout
...
the whole movie and Ishida's background as a child in 6th grade is established very clearly for viewers. Although I've heard that the movie touches base better in the manga on the background stories of all characters and especially Ishida and Shoko, I still believe that the story is developed well enough for the viewer to develop empathy for both Shoko, the victim in the "crime", and Ishida, the victim who was deserted by his friends.
Art - 10/10
I am not an art master by any means and in real life my art skills are very average, but I know good art when I see it. Kyoto Animation did an outstanding job with portraying certain scenes in the movie the way the narration meant for it to be portrayed, and the transition scenes were excellent for when drama was about to be instigated.
Sound - 8/10
I will keep this section short because I don't know how to describe the sound in the movie, but when it was accompanied by the good art in every scene it made it 10x better. You could probably watch the whole movie in Shoko's perspective and barely hear anything and only read the subtitles, but the sound made the storytelling more dramatic and made the viewer more hooked to the movie. The sound and the drastic change of melody in the background also gives the viewer cues about when an important scene is about to transpire.
Character - 8/10
Now this is probably the most controversial section of the whole movie, besides the issues it tackles. To avoid any spoilers, all I will say is that I don't like a few of the characters that were introduced to us in the movie. Also, very few characters, 1 or 2, that weren't there when Shoko was bullied/in Ishida's youth feel very unnecessary and not important in the movie and the storytelling of how Ishida makes amends. Although I've heard that a few characters that were generally not liked by the audience for their behavior get very good character development in the manga, I don't think that is relevant to this. The movie and the manga are two different things that should be judged separately.
Enjoyment - 9/10
For me enjoyment does not necessarily mean only happiness, but also that the story brought out emotions inside of you that usually remain dormant and being able to visualize yourself in the movie. For this reason, I cried once but very briefly, I can say that I totally enjoyed this movie.
Overall/Conclusion - 9/10
This movie is probably one of the best anime movies I've ever seen, arguably the best (I have not seen Kimi no Na Wa but I have heard it is considered a rival to this movie in its excellence), and possibly one of the best movies, whether it be eastern or western. The story, the art, the sound, characters, and my overall enjoyment all contributed to making this a good movie for me to watch, despite it tackling very heavy and serious issues, and perhaps the most important thing to talk about is the excellence in the cover art for the movie. Ishida reaching up into the sky as "spring" for him arrives is very well understood after watching the movie. Aside from references/connections between the movie and the cover art, it is easy to say that the cover art for the movie is simply captivating. It is the first thing that made me excited to finally watch this movie. To avoid going off topic, I will make my statement here. I easily recommend this story to anyone who is looking for a good story that is not too light hearted and has some of the greatest character development (Shoko and Ishida) in any anime movies.
