Wonder Egg Priority was an original anime that stood out a lot in the winter season of 2021. And I would go even further. It was one of the great highlights of that year, even though it is unfinished and we are just setting sail for the second anime season this year. An ambitious and complex project that brings together a great effort on the part of the production to deliver something of incredible quality.
In a perfect world I would be writing this text with the anime fully completed. Unfortunately, this text was written before the final episode of WEP was aired. The reason for

this is about the problematic production of this project that went through real hardships, for example: delays, animation of the episode being delivered in the same week that it would be released, accumulation of work and a staff that only grew with each episode. All this with a team totally focused on delivering the best of yourself for this project that went beyond a simple seasonal anime. This all led to the case that decreed the final postponed until June 29th, the eighth episode was not ready to be delivered, being transformed into an unplanned recap, etc. Due to the fact that there was no more space in the anime's broadcast schedule originally, there was no room for the last episode. If you are interested, you can read in detail in an article published in Sakuga Brasil.
Before starting to write about the anime itself, it is necessary to give some warnings of possible triggers since the anime deals with several sensitive topics such as suicide, self-mutilation, bullying, pedophilia, sexual abuse and themes of the LGBT + sphere. With that in mind, it is possible to imagine that all of this is just played to generate drama for free. However, I come to reiterate that all of these issues are dealt with responsibly and are exposed to promote debates on taboos in society, especially the Japanese.
In the very first minutes, WEP piques his curiosity to find out who is that girl who looks like Coraline with heterochromia, who needs to be carrying a mysterious egg. Which is convinced to break the egg by a mysterious person within a mysterious world of dreams, in the greatest Persona or Inception style. And, to our surprise, upon accepting to break the egg, a girl ends up leaving who must be protected against small lackeys called Seenos Evils destined to kill the person who came out of the wonderful egg. Furthermore, to make matters worse, there is still a big scary monster to be defeated.
After that, we discover that this protagonist named Ai Ohto suffers from bullying at school, and that, from her only friend, Koito, ends up committing suicide at school. Only we are presented with a solution and that is the great move in history. There is a way to save your friend by bringing her back to life, only for that, it will be necessary to protect the fallen souls, who are also there because of suicide, for this, it will be necessary to defeat their mental traumas that are the personified in big bosses (in the greatest classic videogame style) called Wonder Killer.
All of this being presented with a sophisticated look, worthy of being considered with a cinematic quality, unlike many animes that are broadcast on TV. The animation is smooth and prizes for its small details. Having many scenes that bring out an aspect of body language to express the feelings of the characters. Remembering many Kyoto Animation anime.
Another highlight is the intense action scenes. It will please all fans of this type of scene with an arsenal full of volume and weight that cause a lot of impact.
With each episode we are presented with new surprises and discussions of heavy topics, thus adding to the mystery. And that typical anime where you can spend time thinking with friends about countless theories (that's what I did) or end up understanding nothing (it happened to me, too, haha). This could end up leaving a big mess in the script, but the anime proved to be concise in dealing with all of these issues addressed, without losing the line even with a turbulent production and without an ending shown in the schedule, demonstrating a great effort of the production to bring something memorable for the industry.
Besides, it is even more enriched when we talk about the cast of characters, highlighting the main nucleus of the four protagonists. All are very well presented, with episodes focused individually on them for further development, and along with small details in the animation that enrich their personalities. The plot gets denser with each episode, leaving the viewer more distressed and wondering the real reasons for all that with the characters, and it all ends up generating a lot of empathy for those girls as they pass on what is revealed.
Possibly one of the best animes of the last seasons, with a high level of direction, script, animation, characters, etc. If you are looking for an anime with an impressive look and with a psychological suspense, this is the right choice. The purpose of the anime is that girls can better understand death and suicide so that they can resist this temptation. Many of the questions raised by the anime will be focused on this or other heavier and more complex themes, so I do not recommend it to someone who is in a more mentally fragile moment. Better to wait for a more favorable moment to enjoy this work. If you feel truly prepared for this style of heavier narrative, this anime is a true full plate to nourish your desires. Here we can see the potential of real talents in this industry even in chaotic production.
